CTPaul, you'll likely have to drive more than 2 hrs from CT to get into decent grouse hunting -- either to NY or VT. Alot of your initial scouting can be done via Google Earth. There's good woodcock hunting on some state lands in CT if you look around -- as everyone has said, look for the young stag...

I had a sporstdog beeper it was just to to loud in my opinion even when I used it just on point... im sure the thing got the birds running ..now in heavy cover I just use a good ol bell For my purposes, the beep was louder than I wanted, too. Mike Flewelling's (Holden, ME) bells are sold through Dogs Unlimited. Hand made, great bells, loud (at least the "long range" bell is). He does make quieter bells; you'd have to contact him directly or call Dogs Unlimited and ask if they have any shorter range bells. Of course, what you need depends...

Ryan, welcome to New England. The native upland game birds are American woodcock and ruffed grouse. All the NE states have open seasons on woodcock, and all but RI have a grouse season.
