Recall birds?

Have 10 Bobwhites in my recall house, been there a week. When I was putting the birds in the house (ordered 12), two got away from me. Those two did not go far and for the next three days, I'd see them by the house (wanting to get in with the other 10) but the birds could not figure out how to get i...

Launcher Orientation

A tip I learned from this forum: Place a bird in a mess bag down wind of the bird in the launcher, this way the pup picks up the bagged bird's scent first to lock up on. Thus the pup is not too close to the launched bird.....helping to not scare the pup as he/she gets use to a flushed bird AND it wi...

Whistle?

What commands do you link to your whistle, and how many toots?

So far I have my 15 month old coming, "here", on two toots of a whistle.

Quail Recall Pen - finished!

I plan to cover the entry holes the first few weeks as they form their covey. Once I start to use the birds, if they all return, I will cover the entry. They have to fly up to the perching platforms. I have read that keeps them a little more active in the pen.....?? This is my first house so I will ...

Quail Pen

Building a quail recall pen. Should I build one open house for 10 to 12 birds, or one with a divider to split the birds up 5 & 5, or 6 & 6, on each side. This way I can release one side and let the others call them back. If I build one house for all the birds, is it an issue trying to release some b...

Pen Raised?

I've read it's good to diversify. My GSP is 14 months and I have introduced chukars (at 5 months), quail (at 9 months), pheasant (at 12 months), and now a few chukars again. I have some bobwhites coming in August. At this point I just want her picking up the different birds and locking up. I plan to...

Pen Raised?

Been working with pen raised chukars the last two weeks. Put them in my launcher, 4 of 6 fly about 30/40 yards, land, then take off running. My pup see them land and wants to take off after them. Should I keep expecting this with pen raised birds?? (I wanted to teach my pup if she chases, she can't ...

Awesome Joe. I am a first timer as well. The process for me thus far has been amazing! I have owned dogs for much of my life but the bond that is developing with my GSP has been like no other. We share the same passion, hunting! I am still learning but this has worked for me.... Started off just let...

gun-fire question

Over the last five months, I have worked my GSP (14 months old) on introducing birds and gun fire. I started small, working up to a 12 ga. I recently worked her on three chukars, all of which, I popped off a 12 ga (two blanks, one live round) as the birds were released from the launcher. She does no...

Re: chasing anything flying in the yard help???

My GSP (14 months) does the same....robins, blackbirds, nuthatches, you name it. I enjoy watching her natural instincts come out. I figure it helps her learn she can't catch a bird if chased.
Enjoy!

Re: Concerned....?

Yes, I have shot over her - 20 ga. at 9 months and 12 ga. last night (12 months), only blanks at this point. She's so crazy for the birds she does care about the gun blasts (at least she show no signs of). I have used bird launchers but last night I just planted the birds. I don't want to push her a...

Re: Concerned....?

I put her on birds at 6 months (quail) just to see how she would react, she held a solid point and did chase in excitment after I flushed the bird. Also, got her on some birds at 9 months (quail - again) with a buddy one day, the same results. We do have some wild pheasants on our farm and she has b...

Put my 12 month old GSP on birds today. She locked up well each time she came within 5 to 10 yards of the bird, held a good point. Concern I have is, when the bird took flight and I held her back on a check cord (so she wouldn't chase) she barked in excitement as the birds flew off.....should I be c...

Quail recall

For quail recall pens, any suggestion on the method to "train" the quail to recall, before I start working my GSP on the birds. I have read Wehle's thoughts regarding (Wing & Shot), just wondering about other methods?
Thanks.

Took my 6 month old GSP on a trip this past week to northern Michigan. She did really well. She spent three days, two night with a 10 year old setter my buddy has, having no issues getting along with, two nights in a cabin she was unfamilar with, and covered new woodland she has never seen. She quar...

I have a 6 month old GSP that I am taking to northern Michigan this next week. She is CRAZY birdie, I have been doing very little as far as field training with her thus far. We (my wife and children) have been spending a lot of time loving on her and working on basic obediance. I have also let her e...
