Re: Beer?

Pabst! It didn't win a Blue Ribbon for nothing!!

Actually, I like Blatz too. Probably even more than PBR - Blatz is Americas great light beer.

Or a pint of Guinness. Like Mother's milk......

Re: What gun dog breed do you currently own and why?

Vizsla - I wanted more hunt than the Weim I had but love the coat, the energy and the smarts. My wife doesn't like the energy as much. So I got a Braque Francais as my second dog. Calm in the house, sweet as pie and an absolutely fabulous nose, excellent form in the field, retrieves like a champ and...

Re: Keeping bird dogs inside?

I have pets that hunt. That's my rule. I don't want to own a piece of hunting property that I only use 10 - 20 times per year. Not fair to the animal and not fair to me or the family. All of my bird dogs have been inside pets. That can be challenging due to the energy level of these breeds but my do...

Re: Boots

If you are doing true upland hunting then I would go for a boot that has specifically designed for that type of wear. You will see the same design elements across different manufacturers - moc toe, low profile tread, uninsulated, light weight, etc. I have a garage full of boots that were bad experim...

Re: All around dog?

Weimaraner. For all around hunting is a great dog. Smarter than heck too. My first hunting dag was a Weim. Very good on upland, very good in the water, big enough to pucj through heavy grass/reeds/cattails. Weims were bred to hunt big game. My Weim bitch was big - 75-80lbs and I bred her once to a h...

Re: Dog Food

I feed Fromm's. My Vizsla is the pickiest eater of any hunting dog I have ever encountered. I've tried all sorts of different foods and finally he dives right in to the Fromm's so that's what he gets. The other dog doesn't give a crap what he eats.

I prefer the S&W Governor. Think it is made better, the fit and finish are very good and the trigger is better IMO. Oh, and it's a true six shooter.

Re: Upland Hunting Coats - Recommendations?

I used to wear Filson Waxed coat but traded it in on an L.L. Bean version. The Filson was just so stiff and wasn't ever going to be flexible enough for me. The LL Bean is not as thick of coton duck but it stops briars just as well, has a front loading game bag and is cut a little more generously to ...

I'm AtTheMurph (or ATM), 49yr old man currently with 2 bird dogs (Vizsla 10yr , Braque Francais 3yr) and the desire to hunt as much as I can. I'm in central Indiana so right on the edge of quail and pheasant land but I also own land in E. central WI which is good for pheasant and waterfowl (I have a...

Never had that happen but my hunting partner has put the wad through a pheasant. I told him it would have been cheaper to just whack the bird with the end of his barrel and save the shell.

Re: Dog in foot trap

My younger dog got caught in a foot trap last season. Scared the crap out of me but as soon as he was out he didn't care. Went right back to hunting. My older dog got caught in a coyote snare several years ago. I didn't notice right away and had waled at least 100yds when I couldn't find him. He was...
