Re: Range

I would just like to point out that having field trial champions in a bloodline does not make bird dogs. A line of dogs that have been hunted on wild birds for generations will produce bird dogs just as well if not better as those that have been "proven" in the racing competitions that we call field...

Merry Christmas Everyone

I would like to wish everyone on the forum a Merry Christmas. Remember that Jesus Christ is the reason for the season. He is God in the flesh who was born into the race of mankind by a virgin girl named Mary. He lived a spotless, sinless life and then went to the cross and died for our sins and 3 da...

Rip Rap Pointers

I am a setter man first and foremost, but I appreciate any breed of dog that will get the job done. My question to the pointer men on the forum is this, which modern english pointer bloodlines go to back to the Rip Rap dogs? If my memory serves me right these were black and white pointers who were w...

Re: Best Hunting Dog? (Opinions)

The best bird hunting dog in my opinion is the english setter. If you want a trailing dog for large or small game, you need a plott hound. If you need a retriever get a lab. These are my picks. I have never owned a lab but have seen several work out of a duck blind. I have bird hunted behind setters...

Just put the dog in birds, and have fun hunting him this season. Don't get too hung up on "training" at this point, bird contact will bring out what you want to see.

I've hunted with a modell 311 in 20 gauge for a long time.( It was my 1st shotgun purchase at 16 or 17 and I'm now 45). I've owned a lot of shotguns over the years, but my bird gun is still the old savage 311. I can hit with it, and with it's 26 inch barrels, It is a good handling gun, I still carry...

Re: What gun dog breed do you currently own and why?

I currently own 2 English Setters, and have hunted Setters for over 20 years. I like setters because: 1- They will get in the rough where the birds are. 2- Class & style on point. 3- They will hunt for me and not for themselves. 4- Temperment. 5- I own and hunt setters because they are what I think ...

My Boys and I hunted about 2 hours on Saturday morning. Found one covey but didn't kill any birds. My young dog Sport bumped them in heavy cover & we didn't shoot because he bumped them. This was his first wild bird hunt. He will learn that he can't get as close to them as he can training quail. We ...

We also hunt private land. Last year we got into 2 coveys on opening day and we just hunted about 2 hours late in the afternoon. Quail seem to be coming back strong in our area because there is more grain and less cotton being raised.
