Re: Could the dogs of 50 years ago win today?
There are a lot more dogs being bred today, perhaps to many, so it stands to reason that there will be more good ones. However an outstanding individual is still an outsranding individual now or 50 years ago. Being able to find the one that is capable to compete at Ames and have the desire to do so ...

Welcome to the forum. Except that the dog wastes a lot of time being called back regularly , and may bust birds responding to your command. Much better to use a cue for changing direction at a distance- if that is what you want. I prefer to let the dog go ( pointing breed) , having taught him to ho...

THERE IS A DANGEROUS LINE HERE. Don't you think that PETA members think that our bird dogs running down a crippled bird is gruesome? What about hobbling a bird so it won't run during training? What about using live birds for training at all? I don't trap or chase game with dogs but I do support tho...

OK, I'll try this again. Unless the laws have changed you can get a federal permit to live trap raptors and relocate them. If some of you just want to have a little urinating contest then either kill the offending bird or don't. In my view you have a right to defend your livestock so do it however i...

Wolters is probably outdated. I read water dog about 40 years ago and gun dog about 30 years ago. That dates me and the books. At the time they were probably pretty good books. There are more modern books abvailable that are worse. If you want to read a real joke, read bird dog by Ben Williams, pure...

There used to be a federal live trap permit available for problem raptors. You could live trap and relocate them far enough away to keep them from coming back. Don't know that type of permit is still available.

There are plenty of studys that show it is better to wait to alter working dogs, especialy breeds that might be prone to joint problems. People that are not able to stop their gyps from being bred should spay as soon as possible or if bred get the shot to abort, or not have females in the first place.

I use an astro and a tracker collar. The country we hunt is rough, steep, and big. The tracker will usually pick up a signal when the astro will not. The tracker will not give you distance or exact direction but it works well enough that if I could only have one it would be a tracker.

It depends on what you do with your dogs. I have been told that if you hunt or trial a dog and condition really hard it is better to wait. If the breed you have is prone to hip problems it is better to wait. If the dog is mainly a pet with sporadic exercise it is not as important.

It doesn't take much to turn a staunch pointing dog into a flusher - just shoot any and all bumped birds... done. Getting dogs and guns into Canada is not a problem. The dogs need a health certificate from your vet and proof of a rabbies shot. The closer you do this before crossing the border the better. Stop on the U.S. side and have your guns checked so there is no question that you brought them in with you. ...
