First of all pen raised quail are not always the best training birds. Second, pen raised quail are usually better if the dog is still on a check cord. Third, if you are using pen raised quail you might quit and go right to wild birds. If the dog is standing pigeons and behaving the way you want he w...

I hope all turns out good. You always hear that a dog does not find birds with their tail but I hate tp see a dogs beauty altered by an injury. Some people that make those kind of statements may just have a dog with lousy tail.

We in the US owe a huge debt to the Canadian armed forces. Go to any small town in SK and look at their war memorials and you will see why. I'm sure it is that way all over Canada. So this Vet thanks them very much.

Sometimes with some dogs you just have to start over or back to basics. If this dog has all the prey drive and want to you need it is time to stop the chase. How you go about that is up to you. There is nothing to be gained by letting him bump birds.

pointers take the cold quite well as long as they keep moving. When they get wet from snow or frost they will chill when they are at rest or back at the rig. Gone hunting makes some good points. That war of wills mentioned is self induced in most cases. Start with a well bred pup. Teach it the basics as in come when called, don't ever weaken on the basics and YOUR WILL will be the order of the day. Be consistent, be firm when necessary, don't be afraid to...

With a young dog you might want to hunt alone or with one gun if you take someone along. As garrison stated only birds handled properly should be shot. I believe the more birds shot over the dog the better and the more you take her out the more progress will be made. If you have fun the dog will too.

You might want to try another vet. Find out if she is bred and at her age you might consider getting her the shot. Once that is taken care of she will come back in and you will have learned how to handle that situation.

How is your dog bred? Does he bark only when he sees cattle or hogs or does he bark on a fairly cold trail as well? I have a pointer female ( a rescue) a lot like your's. The difference is she would try to eat the whole sack of dog food if I let her.
