Re: To Force Fetch or Not to Force Fetch?
Did you teach your dog to sit? Come on command? If your expectation is a reliable retrieve then it needs to be taught. The use force or some other method, that is your choice and somewhat depends on the dog's temperament. I follow SmartFetch program for my Spinoni. Not a fan of the wording "force fe...

Cut up a hotdog. Sit on the ground. Toss the bumper and give a piece of hotdog for delivery to hand. You do not need to say anything. If your pup is food motivated they will play this game all day.

Yea you passed...
Don't give a command when you know the dog will not obey. Like at at a dead run chasing a bird.
AKC hunt tests are pass fail. Don't get hung up on scores.

Pigeons.. Much heartier. Quail live to die. Pigeons recall very well. They reproduce on their own. Unless you lock the wings they will fly away. I don't work quail until my dogs are steady to fall. You do not need a permit to keep pigeons.

At master level you are carrying a gun, looping over shoulder it enables walking up to line freeing up a hand to set watch or get organized. Less likely to loose them. I clip mine to a belt loop. Google or watch a YouTube video.
Besides it looks cool.
