Don't they do alot of avoidance training? Start low and put up the pressure until compliance? I have not seen the video but been to simular seminars with same method. I am not the biggest fan of Dobbs method of collar conditioning. I feel they use to much pressure. I feel you can use less pressure and properly collar condition the dog. I suggest you get a dvd Mike Lardy's collar conditioning dvd. Mike Lardy is one of the top Field Trial Trainers in the country. ...

What do you guys do about your pup sniffing deer tracks? Do you say "no" or just ignor? I hunt where there is a ton of deer and I handle it like this. All of my dogs are e-collar dogs and fully broken to them. When a pup's a pup, I don't make a big deal of it. When they're actually in the woods, I ...

Lab man's got it nailed pretty much. The only part I disagree slightly with is that some dogs are noise shy, not just gun shy. If you start from the time they're pups making load noises around them with pleasant association the dog will never be shy of any sound, except possible the dreaded firework...

Mainiac, you are correct in your assumptions. The fact that your dog is picking up the scent and pointing after the fact shows us the light is burning, though maybe dimly at this point. Keep exposing your dog to wild birds till she gets it. And she will get it. Now she will likely break and chase f...

Keep in mind also that as many dogs are noise shy as are gunshy. Make a lot of loud noises around the dog. Bang feed dish at dinner time, clap your hands and good dog her, take her on a leash where there's traffic and noise. Get her used to loud, pleasant noises. I once trained a field trial dog tha...

Why would you whoa train a dog that holds point.I was hunting with him yesterday and Parker went on point.now he will hold point for awhile and I never have to worry about him moving. You wouldn't as long as he was steady to the point and not indicating he would move. Even if he jumps and busts the...

Fred; you'll also find many opinions on training a dog on this board and few are totally wrong. You'll find that in training a bird dog, traditional methods rule, but that is rapidly evolving, at least with the Versatile dog owners. Re: What am I looking at? (Need some opinions)

Perfection doesn't really address the basics in depth, Dobbs does. Dobbs is a great trainer with a fine record. He prob...

Just a couple of things: You don't want her to flush and chase grouse; she's a pointing breed. Grouse are the toughest bird you can train a dog on; expect a lot of failure. Don't let her catch planted or liberated birds she's supposed to be pointing. If you want her to chase birds, keep her on a che...

However, with respect to young pups biting, it is common and unrelated to whether a dog turns out to be a "maneater," an aggressive dog that bites people. That type of aggression usually shows later, after 6 mos., and more often when dogs enter dog puberty or adolescence. Puppy biting is common, th...

Well and succinctly put Helen. Just by coincidence, there is a post on uplandbirddog today from a beginning trainer who thought obedience early and often was the right way to go. Yes, that is correct. You cannot have a well trained dog without challenging the dog. As an example: once she comes 100% of the time on a CC, start overlaying the collar. Start with level one and gradually move up until you notice a slight reaction from her, a twitch but not a yelp. Then exactly as ...

I don't put up with biting from any pup. When I say NO, they better stop. Especially with a cocker. Most of them I've been around are "nippers" anyhow. You could be asking for a serious problem as the dog ages if you don't curtail it now. Either grab it by the nose and pinch it saying NO, or slap it...

It is really a simple thing to do. You don't need pinch collar or anything but a heeling stick, leash, and collar. What you have to do is to show the pup where he is supposed to be. I wait until they're about six months to do this. Put him on a lead and collar. Take your heeling stick and keep in st...

You're missing a step. Remember, a collar is only used for reinforcement. First, get the dog coming reliably to "here" on a CC. Then, CC and Whistle. Finally, whistle, nudge him with the collar while still on CC. Eventually, you can say "here", "whistle", or both, holding CC in left hand and holding...

How right you are, but what everybody forgets is, you can sure mess a dog up if the birds are done properly. As everybody knows, it's 100x harder to get a dog corrected than it is do it correct. Go buy some birds and plant them yourself so you will know exactly where they are and bring your dogs in...
