Lab man's got it nailed pretty much. The only part I disagree slightly with is that some dogs are noise shy, not just gun shy. I would most strongly suggest you you buy a book like Dobbs (Tritronics) or one similar and follow that. The old Dobbs book is excellent for a beginning trainer. It's geared to the hunter as well as the trialer.

Fred, you never have to worry about them thinking the crate is a "jail". To a dog, a kennel is security. Mine are in them all the time in my truck and in the house, you'll find them at various times of the day just sleeping in their kennels. Most dogs love and feel secure when they're in a kennel.

I put a choker on them at about 6-8 months, when they're regular training starts. The Delmar Smith Wonder Lead is also excellent. If you buy a heeling stick, the pup won't tug at the lead.

Here's something else I do when I hunt one particular cover that tears the fronts on my dogs legs up. Wrap the let in vetwrap, then duct tape over that. Does a nice job of protecting the dog.

It depends on the size of the dog and the size of the chain. Some guys use welding cable instead. Some also use bungee cords unstead of rope so if the chains hang up, they cushion the jerk.

The dog is this avitar is pointing a woodcock in Wi. woodcock cover. This is light cover, much is heavier. My dogs hurtle themselves into the cover all day. I've never had one pick it's way through it unless it was an old dog.

The dog must all ready be trained to use the collar effectively. The collar is a reinforcement tool only. You'll find a tremendous difference in the amount of juice a lab absorbs compared to an ES. Some ES'S. An old dog of mine, now dead, could empty a collar and keep on smilin'.

I like the 30' lariat style cords. I actually use them from 15' on up, but never longer than the 30'. The lariat style cords won't tangle in brush, collect thorns, etc. and they don't tangle.

I never worry about it at that age. Just make a retrieving maniac out of her. In a very short time when you start obedience and force with her that problem will be taken care of. Make sure you get some good books or DVD's and follow them completely.
