I was in a similar situation. Don't worry too much about the dogs age. You have plenty of time to teach. Especially with a good trainer. I would start by listing your location and posting a trainer request for your area. I'm sure someone on here knows of a good trainer in your area (or is one).

This has been said but I wanted to reiterate it. Carry your .40 with FMJ rounds. Defense rounds won't work on a bear. The chance that you'll need it is slim but I'd rather be safe than sorry. No need to buy a new gun soley for that purpose. Fill that magazine. It'll do the job.

Yes! I'm in Stillwater and my 13wk old GSP is getting some great exposure right in my back yard. We jumped four of them over the weekend. Been hearing that distinct call every day too. I don't know enough about them to draw any conclusions but I certainly didn't expect them around here.

Just like bowhunting said. Tuck the head under the wing and hold firmly. Only thing I'd add is that you will notice a change in the way the bird is breathing. In my experience, they will fly off prematurely if you don't wait for that.
