Re: Help with potty training a 10 week old GSP, PLEASE!
You said you haven't scolded the pup for going inside. How is he supposed to know that's a wrong thing if you don't tell him? Right now he knows peeing outdoors is fine, and going indoors must be too since you don't seem to care. No need to go ballistic on him, but he needs to know peeing inside is...

Re: Recommendation on upland chaps
I highly recommend Orvis and Filson chaps. Orvis are my go to because they are much lighter and more flexible. They go on and off easier too, because they zip at the bottom. Filsons work great for late season warmth. Orvis are maintenance free. Filsons get a 10 minute coat of wax once a year. (I saw...

Re: New England Tick Control
Parastar has been working great for me. We are in a tick infested area and I did not find one single tick last year (on the dog). Plenty on myself, even with permethrin on my clothing. Parastar is fipronil based, where I think the ticks are not so resistant to it yet. Frontline was my go to, but saw...

Mo is right. Take a day off, and do something fun. Like a hike in the woods. Keep him obedient, but make it fun.

Re: Potty Training and Extreme Cold....
In winter months, I've always tossed them a couple feet out the door every few hours while I wait at the door. Never waited for a pup that young to tell me when it was time. You may have a filthy walk way or deck for the next few weeks, but at least he's learning where to go. Soon enough the temps w...

Welcome to the forum. I lost my last dog to bone cancer too. That was a rough one. Glad you are back on the horse with a new project. Training a pup is a lot of work, but it really is fun and rewarding. This is a great place to come for info (and entertainment). I wish you the best with your pup.

Re: How much does training cost?
I was in a similar situation. Don't worry too much about the dogs age. You have plenty of time to teach. Especially with a good trainer. I would start by listing your location and posting a trainer request for your area. I'm sure someone on here knows of a good trainer in your area (or is one).

Re: Chewing up the dog bed
My dog has destroyed any bed, towel, blanket, etc that I've ever offered him. As for now, he gets nothing. Sleeps on the plastic liner and really doesn't seem to mind. I've been looking at kuranda beds as of lately. The trainer I'm working with has one in each kennel run, and he swears by them. I'm ...

Re: GSP Breeders
Sorry to bring this post back to the original topic. I know nothing of Crystal Kennels. What I can say, is that Sharp Shooters and Thunderheads produce fabulous dogs. I currently have a Thunderhead dog and I'm waiting for my first Sharp Shooters dog. I've been around many dogs from both lines and I ...

Re: i need two great recipes
I will second Nike's marinade for goose. I follow a similar marinade. I cube the breasts, marinate over night, then I wrap them in a small strip of bacon and grill. Even people who don't care for wild game, love it. The pheasant will be good prepared any way you'd cook chicken. I often use it in wil...

Re: grouse reports
Walked for five hours yesterday. Pointed one, jumped four, shot at two, got one. Didn't see or hear a single WC where we usually expect to. They were really jumpy. Maybe there is more pressure this year, though we didn't see any other hunters. I think I'll head north further next week. Maybe into WI...

Re: Lazy eye?
My GSP had a very similar look to him when he was young. My vet said that it somewhat common in pups and most outgrow it. Mine is nine months now and it seems to have subsided, but there are still times that I notice it (usually when he is too tired). Nobody else seems to see it when I point it out ...

Re: $120 plus parts to replace a headlight bulb
Those are a bit of a pain but i think it'll be easier than you think. You don't have to remove the tire. Take the few screws or push pins loose to pull the inner fender liner back. There are two vertical screws at the corner of the bumper fascia. Remove those and give the corner of the fascia a quic...

Re: $120 plus parts to replace a headlight bulb
I'm in the automotive industry. This is becoming more and more common. It's just as frustrating for us on the service end to have to tell our customers how much it costs. Makes us look like the bad guys, when it's really those fine engineers and designers that never have to touch a vehicle for servi...

Re: Pistol for bears?
This has been said but I wanted to reiterate it. Carry your .40 with FMJ rounds. Defense rounds won't work on a bear. The chance that you'll need it is slim but I'd rather be safe than sorry. No need to buy a new gun soley for that purpose. Fill that magazine. It'll do the job.

Yes! I'm in Stillwater and my 13wk old GSP is getting some great exposure right in my back yard. We jumped four of them over the weekend. Been hearing that distinct call every day too. I don't know enough about them to draw any conclusions but I certainly didn't expect them around here.

Re: pigeon planting-- my dumb Q of the day
Just like bowhunting said. Tuck the head under the wing and hold firmly. Only thing I'd add is that you will notice a change in the way the bird is breathing. In my experience, they will fly off prematurely if you don't wait for that.

Re: Torn ACL
I have experience with both. The TPLO was done to correct the extracapsular that didn't work. If you want your dog to be able to run again, the TPLO is a must. Because it has been a month, arthritis is going to be inevitable. Also, I caution you to be very diligent with your rehab. Many dogs learn t...
