A flagger

All I have a 2 yr old pointer that is just a wonderful dog. He hunts hard, holds his birds well, retrieves to hand, everything you want but one exception; he flags until you get right up close and then he firms up and looks like a million bucks. And he will honor another dog but is going to flag. Dr...

Pigeon coop and quail holding pen

I have to move my pigeon coop close to my quail holding pen. Probably 100 - 150 ft apart. Should i worry about possible disease transmitting from one pen to another? Any precautions i should take?

What would you do?

I have 2 small pigeon coops - 1 that has birds that have been with me for a year and recall perfectly and 1 coop that has birds that have been relocated and in there for a month. It's time to turn the newer pigeons out and see if they will stay around. Would you turn them out with the older pigeons?...

Young pigeon question

I took one of my Johnny houses and turned in to a coop. Had a pair mate and bring off one bird nesting in bottom corner of house. Young bird about 2-2.5 weeks old, rapidly putting on feathers and starting to hop around bottom of house. Tonight I noticed for first time parents did not go to young bir...

Re: pigeon coop in dog area

A question from the other side.... Lets say you put your coop close by kennels. My kennels sit on an acre that is fenced in. Which allows me to turn dogs out for exercise / happy time while I am feeding up, cleaning kennels, etc. so dogs will be around coop. Will the pigeons become "desensitized" to...

Re: Pigeon question?

Well guys what started so well (8 birds) has dwindled down to 2 birds. Let my final 4 out of the loft to fly on their own this afternoon and only 2 returned. Not sure what happened, I did not see a hawk around.
Oh well, I will start over I guess.

Re: Pigeon question?

Update Now using all 8 pigeons in training and they are reliably recalling to coop. Much easier to release and let fly home as opposed to carding, tethering, etc. And another benefit- they flush and fly away- pup realizes real soon no benefit to chasing birds. If someone asked me what would be the f...

Re: Pigeon question?

just an update - 8 of 9 pigeons are recalling. I am 3/4 of the way to my training area. Here is a question for you all. I had been feeding with an automatic feeder before beginning this homing project but have lately been manually feeding to make sure I was releasing hungry pigeons. Once I get comfo...

Re: Pigeon question?

Hey guys Have opened up loft 3 days now. Still have 8 of 9. Had one today that came out of coop, caught the wind, and just left, I watched him fly off. Maybe he will return. Maybe not. Guys I am new to training dogs but I see a tremendous advantage when having pigeons you don't have to hobble with a...

Pigeon question?

I posted recently wanting to buy homing pigeons in ga/ al. No response. I have 9 pigeons I bought back in spring that I have used in launchers, using tethers and hobbling with garden hoses. But that is a pain to say the least. I have no idea what kind of pigeons these are as they are all different c...

Re: What the heck happened?

Thanks guys for the helpful responses. I should have made myself a little clearer. When I said young I mean 15 months old now. I am a traveling salesman and so it was all I could do to teach the whoa and here command along with getting him to handle in the field and that has been taught well in my o...

What the heck happened?

Young english pointer was perfect on retrieving last year. Soft mouth, bring bird right to you. All you could ask for. Natural, I did no training what so ever other than throwing him a ton of bumpers. Fast forward to this year and he is trying to eat the downed bird. He still brings him to me, but t...
