Absolutely let a young dog like that catch a bird. I would caution against using a pigeon as they are strong birds. Hadn't really thought about raw. I have 10 dogs, so I am not sure how easy it would be. Plus I live pretty much in the middle of no where. The closest Walmart is 55 miles. Sourcing might be a problem. But I will give it a look, might be just for Mona, but worth looking into.

Her initial issue is often mistaken for megaesphogaus. Yes they chew their food. But not all the food gets chewed. I tried Diamond Puppy, which is pretty small. Jumping in when you get there is usually a dominance issue. It is his bird and he thinks you are going to take it from him. Just need to work on who is the boss, and what is expected of him. Should be pretty easy to take care of.

cjhills is absolutely correct. Vern had four ties that were of maybe a minute duration. Result 3 puppies. I might add, that Vern was almost 11 at the time of breeding. From my experience age becomes a factor in the length of the tie. I also know for a fact he is potent as I had a virility test done....

Personally, as only one bird is found, and missed, then I prefer the callback for retrieve. It is a much more controlled situation from perspective. The dog understands much better and usually performs better in that kind of situation.

I don't think 1 syllable makes a difference. I have Vern, Chloe Darius, Ardoise pronounced r-dwaz, Frances, Hugo, Etoile, Zipper, Finnegan and Hellion. Calling out multiple syllable names is no big deal. I like names that are not as common, although I have run into a fair amount of Chloe's.
