They are definitely bad this year. I was out training just west of the Twin Cities metro area and picked at least 10 off the dog and myself during training. Found another 4 on the dog when I got home.

Sorry - should have been more specific Don. I am training a pointing lab, hence the reason I am looking at carding or the hobble.

Carding vs. Bird Hobble
Is it easier to just buy a bird hobble from GDS rather than dealing with cardboard or 2 liter bottles? Not sure on how to do this or even if the bird can fly with a hobble on so any info would be appreciated. Looking to throw some pigeons out in a field eventually and then take my dog for a walk in ...

For a bird introduction to my pup, I want to start with a couple of pigeons in a wire bird carrier and put it on the ground for him to walk around and look at. Anyone have any idea about SW pigeon carriers? I was thinking about picking up the 24 x 12 carrier (fits 8 or more pigeons) from GDS, but no...

I don't think you have anything to worry about, he's very young. Just keep a closer eye on him after 8pm and don't give him water after 6. As for wandering when out, there's nothing wrong with that! He's getting more confident, which is a good thing. I don't even really speak to my pup when we're o...

So i have a couple things i want to discuss in regards to my 10 week old lab that I am not quite sure about. Let me know what you guys think. 1. Re: A pointing lab is just a lab/cross
You're really arguing that the apla format for retrieving is equivilant to a MH test or a FT? That test is pretty similar to navdha tests, and I bet most navdha dogs could pass it, but I doubt many could pass a MH test. Its interesting that apla allows a dog to run over birds from upwind without fa...

Re: A pointing lab is just a lab/cross
The reason that most pointing labs don't have MH or field trial titles is because most pointing lab breeders are too busy running their dogs in APLA trials. Most people don't have time to run their dogs in two different venues. If you want to find some lab breeders to beat up on, you should focus y...

When I went to pick up my pup, there was another guy there picking up his dog with his family. I just went through potty training a GSP. You've received all good advise so far. To recap (plus a couple other ideas): (1) Take outside to one spot frequently and wait until he goes. It's good to have a "command", "go pee", "go potty", "go now" or whatever. Lots of praise when he goes. (2) Take ou...

And you think that hardcore field trialers don't shrink their own breeding pool? The "ability" to perform in field trials moves to the head of the line and everything else moves back. There is zero difference. What makes a good field trail dog? A dog that has a stable temperment, good conformation,...

Re: A pointing lab is just a lab/cross
The gentotypic frequency of the pointing gene in labs is low, so if you breed to improve the point, you're stuck with whatever other genes those dogs have. So, if they have a higher frequency of EID, hip displasia, eye problems ect, you're going to increase the frequency of those genes in the popul...
