Re: Bravecto
We have used it on our dogs for about a year, have not had any issues and are very happy with the product. Seems to work very well, this summer saw one tick on the dogs and it was crawling around not attached. Had dogs in catskill area of NY and Ithaca, NY both big tick hot spots, so very happy with...

Train your dog with a checkcord first and when your dog is solidly doing what you expect, implement the e-collar and as Ezzy pointed out you'll have a mile long checkcord. The stimulation is to reinforce/ enforce compliance to a command not punish the dog. I was circumspect at first myself, if you l...

Re: my incredible new gsp pup
Wow. I thought my new pup was good because he is pointing and backing nicely at four months... I was lucky enough to get a dog (one of my two older dogs) that had been made gunshy by a previous owner, and started on the process of recovery by a very well known trainer, who gave me plenty of sound ad...

Re: Advice on pigeon loft size and keeping pigeons
Az, it is walk in, I have been cleaning it once a week, need to add a door to the aviary half and to throw down a sheet of plywood. Overall size is 7' width x 8' long x 6' height. Lots of fluctuating weather the last couple weeks so it's been a good test for the birds, they are hardy. The framed enc...

Re: Transporting Pigeons
+1 on the old dog crate. We just transported 24 birds about 2 hours with an old dog crate and an lcs bird box (expensive), but useful if you're moving birds or traveling to where you train frequently. I hose all the stuff out with a pressure washing.

Re: Advice on pigeon loft size and keeping pigeons
Don, the birds are racers, I picked up from a guy a couple hours of where we are. I am going to keep them as captives to breed. The young birds that I get I will use to home, planning on converting/ adding an old window, when I have young birds. February/ March would be perfect timing. I appreciated...

ever had hunting success with a rescue?
Have rescued two shorthairs over the last two years and both had wild birds (grouse and woodcock) shot over them this fall. One dog we have worked through a gunshy issue and our older female was rescued at age eight from our local humane society, she had never had much work, but is a natural retriev...

Training videos Perfect Start/Perfect finish. You can start by buying perfect start and then buy the perfect finish DVD later. Good luck with your pup. :D +1 Just make sure you have birds. It's well worth the time to watch the entire dvd before you start on training, and as you train watch the spec...

Advice on pigeon loft size and keeping pigeons
Looking to pick up b/t 15 and 30 birds for the winter and hoping they will breed so I have young birds in the spring. Currently the plan is to build a 4'x 8'x 6' loft. Which will exist for the winter inside a garage. (4 wide, 8 long, 6 tall) How many birds can comfortably fit in a loft that size? Wh...

Problems with charging contact points on Alpha TT-10 collars
Has anyone else run into problems with the charging contact points? I flip my collar and run the charging side up (facing dogs chin) because I keep their normal collars on. Garmin customer service suggested cleaning them with a pencil eraser. I've had one collar replaced because it would no longer t...

Re: New E-Collar... Dogtra Edge, Garmin 550 or Garmin Alpha
The value of the GPS feature with the alpha is it allows you to see in the thickest cover what your dog is doing and for me its been invaluable in training me to keep my mouth shut and let my dogs work. I've run the alpha for two years now. The tt-10 collar (older model) has tone, momentary, and con...

Re: Car sickness young pup
Thanks all... Good advice and glad to hear that it is something that he will grow out of. Both of my other dogs have been completely fine with cars and kennels. I think part of his problem was the trauma of a flight and then a four and a half hour car ride home. A week of adjustment and positively t...

Re: porcupine
Two dogs, each have had one significant and one minor episode. Have worked on avoidance every chance I get, the collar works. For me the small ones have done the most damage, my older dog got 450 quills on her first encounter and killed the porcupine. Big running dogs can find a lot of birds but it'...

Car sickness young pup
Just got a young pup, great dog, flown to us from Texas. The only issue I'm having with him is stress (drooling) in the kennel in the car. He has also vomited twice in the car. My thoughts are: No food near car trips Give him some more time to adjust to his new life and no trips in the car for a few...

Looking for open places and fields, Ithaca NY
Wondering if anyone in CNY, specifically Ithaca, or around Ithaca has any places to share that are good for training and running dogs. Also if there are any pointing dog clubs or groups in the region. Thanks, any advice is welcome and appreciated.

Johnny boxes and predators
Looking for advice on designs, I am building a box and worried about small ferrets and ermine. I have access to 40 acres in a remote wilderness area, so my birds will be potentially at risk. Does anyone have any advice to limit the risk either by dividing the pen so that the recall funnel brings bir...

Re: Garmin Alpha?
I've run the alpha for several months on two gsps. Have found it simple to use and relatively intuitive. It's very convenient to have both tracking and training in one collar. Easy to set up the buttons so you can have stim levels set depending on the situation. I run my dogs in very thick cover and...

Rescued GSP
New to GDF and have enjoyed reading all the info on the forum. I recently rescued a 4-6 year old GSP and have been working with her on basic obedience and beginning to heel and whoa her. She runs big and I have been working her out a lot on a checkcord, mostly because I am worried about her recall. ...
