Thanks for this important info. Have only had a dog step in a trap once and it was easy to remove, but some of these traps; you need to handle the situation immediately and this is good to know.

got an anniversary coming up and my wife is going to get me a camera to record some hunts. It is amazing and confusing the number of cameras that now exist in this category (too many perhaps). I've narrowed my search to GoPro, Sony, Garmin Virb, and Kodak. I'm leaning toward the GoPro and the Virb p...

Had some errands up the shore on Saturday and took Chaz for a stomp around one of our favorite coverts - didn't see a thing. We took the back roads back to town and spotted a couple on the road. The first one ambled off the road as I pulled ahead and stopped. I approached the area where he went off ...

took Chaz for a walk Saturday afternoon. Cover still thick. No shooting but we moved between 2-6 birds - unsure if some were the same bird. I have great hopes for the season judging by what I'm reading on other forums and that I actually moved birds in the covert I was walking. It's a place near Dul...

Re: Grouse hunting without a dog

Mntonester did you ever have trouble finding a downed bird? That's one of my biggest fears of hunting without a dog. I don't recall ever losing a grouse hunting without a dog. But there were always two to three sets of eyes to keep track of things back then. That being said, I've never lost a shot ...

Re: Grouse hunting without a dog

All the while growing up in NE MN, we never had a dog. My 4 brothers and I were our dad's eyes and eventual hunting partners. I am of the conviction that a dog will lose you as many opportunities as he finds for you considering some of the dense cover and distances, but I love the company of my dog....

not yet and I hope it doesn't happen. I hunt with a number of old handed down shotguns and don't believe the cost of alternatives to lead for such guns is affordable for many people. Non-tox is required on Fed Waterfowl areas in MN

Re: Reasonable amount to spend on pup

not trying to muddy the water here, but... My Springer Spaniel was an exceptional dog - I paid $175 for him back in 1998. My lab is an exceptional dog - I paid $200 for him in 2006. Those were both less than the asking price; but they were pups remaining from litters in which the breeder was willing...

Re: Need hunting pics ASAP

Minneguy, I'm from Duluth and do an occasional day hunt for pheasant around St. Cloud. I've been of the opinion that a lab/flusher finds as many grouse as he loses (flushing them where it's impossible to get a shot, that is), but he's turned into a great pheasant dog. He's a lot of fun to be with no...

My go-to gun is a Benelli Montefeltro. A carry all day gun that shoots in any weather. I also have a Benelli SBE II that I won at a PF banquet. Excellent gun. You couldn't go wrong with a Benelli.

A dog book?

I've thrown this request out over the years. Maybe someone here knows the title of the book I'm trying to find. It is a collection of dog stories and I can't for the life of me remember the title but it was very enjoyable. Two of the stories involved a Chesapeake Bay retriever who needed an occasion...

except for when I hunt with my brothers, I hunt with one dog, my black lab. My previous was a springer. There was some slight overlapping when the lab was a pup and I would hunt them both. That never posed a problem. The only problem I can see does not involve the dog; it is the circumstance where t...

My son inherited a CZ Bobwhite (20 ga.) from his grandfather. The very first time my son used the gun, he dropped a grouse on the wing with it. For a lower end gun, I've found it to be very nicely made and actually pretty good looking.

for early grouse season I use the old Stevens 20 ga. SxS handed down from my dad and one I learned on as a kid. I later use a cheap Angelo Zoli 20 ga. raised in Silver Bay on the north shore of Lake Superior. Currently live in Duluth. As a kid, we could literally walk out our back door after school to hunt grouse and rabbits. I see I already know a few of you from other boards. I come to you from the land where winter never ends (at least this year). I own a 7 1/2 YO black lab, Chaz. We grouse and pheasant hunt. My previous hunting buddy was a springer spaniel, Bilbo, now departed to the happy hunting grounds. I'm hoping...
