If you want a dog that keeps withing gun range, you might consider a bracco Italiano.
I thought you told me that all The Best People had Standard Poodles.
you are correct, however, everything I've read about the bracco says they hunt close and at a reasonable pace

My condolences. There is a recurring discussion around here that Oscar may be our last (he's only 8YO and hopefully has a good ways to go). We're not getting any younger and anticipate it not being easy to deal with a new dog when the time comes. I've got enough mobility issues of my own. But, never...

I have read multiple articles on the anti-grain dog food hysteria foisted on dog owners which basically says you're buying into a marketing ploy to get you to pay more for dog food. But then, I've also read articles that mention beet pulp as a dog food additive that provides nothing useful - who kno...

We live in a wooded area of Duluth which has become infested with coyotes. We also get the occasional bear or bobcat, but the coyotes are the main concern. My wife has encountered them a few times and some seem to be getting more bold. We both recently got our carry permits (I had let mine lapse a f...

1st, a Springer Spaniel
2nd, a black Lab
3rd, a Standard Poodle

so, no, haven't stayed with the same breed. Loved all three of them and all were/are decent hunters and sweethearts as pets (the Springer was the best hunter, which is not to take away from the abilities of the other two)

Re: So how did You get started with dogs and hunting?

My dad and his cousins lived near each other as kids/young men and they hunted grouse and rabbits. We also had relatives on the farm in SE MN where they would go to pheasant hunt. Even my mom would go down to hunt with the inlaws and other family members (before 6 kids came along). As little kids, w...

Garter snakes pose no threat here in the PNW. Although if I did deal with rattlers hopefully my up-and-coming guineas would take care of them. I know a guy who lived east of me by a couple hours and he was definitely in rattler country. He got his hands on a ton of barn cats and I heard the r...

An AA FC title in a pup's pedigree would not rule him out for me, but for many it would. They sell for half what a well bred MH or NAVHDA Pup sells for. Most family pet/hunting dog foot hunters have no use for 400 yd dog..........Cj amen to that. For my style of hunting, I want a closer working dog...

Had major back surgery 11/8. Was able to get out with my two brothers for our yearly pheasant and grouse hunt a two weeks before. Was in SW MN mid October and the first day there it was 80 deg. We limited our time to later in the day to go easy on the dogs. We had our opportunities and all missed. N...

I suspect GSP popularity hit a spike when one won at Westminster a few years ago. You always hope such a win doesn't ruin the hunting ability as it becomes a pet and not a hunter. I didn't realize poodles were as popular (even though I own one, an excellent hunter BTW), but I suppose all those doodl...

Just an observation, but our last three dogs were end of litter pups aged 12 to 14 weeks. Absolutely a breeze to housebreak and work with them. I attribute that to the extra time with mom and family before going to their new home
