Re: First season checklist?
The only thing you will need to do is gun break the dog and have a solid here command. The dog will learn the rest while hunting. If you can go into the season with a dog that's steady on birds in a launcher, great. If not I'm sure the dog will pick up on it. I'd say go ahead and hunt pheasants if i...

Others gave good stop to flush advice. I would hunt him through his first season before trying to steady him through the shot and fall. He needs to have the hunting experience to reliably remain steady through the flush, then after the season you can steady him to the shot and fall. Doing that now w...

Maybe she is bored of the game, it has become routine for her and she knows that the bird is just gonna sit there. Don't know how you train her but maybe shoot a few. I know dogs get bored of pigeons too because it is repetitive and easy for them, they know the game. Good luck

Don't know what you mean. I can't control my dog to the point where he identifies likely bear resting areas and avoids them. He smelled it, knew it was game and stopped. Didn't even chase it when it ran away.DeLo727 wrote:Man, crazy experience. I won't be allowing my dog to do that anytime but its a great story.

I guess I have a versatile dog
Today while grouse hunting my dog went on point. My dad and I moved in towards the group of fallen trees that he was pointing. I was on the opposite side of my dad when he said that there was a bear right there. We woke it up and it looked drowsy then crawled out of the blow down and ran away. It wa...

Pretty much the same thing as the bird dog circuit, episodes of that can be found on youtube. In my opinion, hunting is not and should not be a competition over who can bag the most birds the fastest. They rush through the fields with loaded guns ripping the birds from their dogs mouth after the ret...

When used properly the ecollar can be your best friend. If used in the wrong manner (which is all too common) it can really mess up a dog. Educate yourself on the proper use of an ecollar and train your dog to know the commands before the ecollar is used.it is very important to understand that they ...

If the ecollar is working properly, make sure it is high up on the dogs neck and tight enough that it will not move, but not too tight. The top of the neck is the narrowest part so if you put the ecollar there it won't shift like if you were to put it on the bottom where it could move up. Longer con...

Get the dog on wild birds as much as possible. As has been said, their behavior is much different than pen raised birds. It takes some time for it to click with wild birds.

When it comes to this, it seems people are either of the view that it's all experience or its in the breeding. I think if a dog is smart, has a good nose, and is given enough experience they can figure out grouse. If the parents have been proven on wild birds I would say you have a good chance at a ...
