Re: Wrist injury
Well, I understand not having the equipment but in this case, he had the equipment. He took films pre-reduction films but the mistake was not taking post reduction films when the XR was available. And, the fact that this dog was a athlete is obvious, both in appearance, in the activity and verbalize...

Re: Wrist injury
Surgery was done on Jan 2nd, after almost 10 days at the Iowa State vet hospital to heal up the wounds/infection involving the pads on her paw. Bandage removed today and stitches out in about 8 more days. Looks pretty rough from all the infection and surgery. Skin is rough due to about a month in sp...

Pads and infection appear to be healing. Might know more about a actual surgery date after tomorrow.

Re: Wrist injury
They did say there is no motion at that wrist joint with the fusion but she has both medial and plantar ligament damage as well as dislocation of the carpal bone so really not a option for repair and the fusion will give her the best chance to be pain free. I am really bummed about how it is going t...

Re: Wrist injury
Well, some update is due, After the second splint change a post reduction film was finally obtained at my insistence. The dog has a carpal dislocation, very obvious that it was not a simple dislocation and now some infection in the paw/pads. So emergency trip to Iowa State Vet school and she has bee...

We changed out the splint this week and the vet was happy with how it looked/felt. At this time, another week in the splint. K-State vet school is closer to us here, so that might be the plan.

Re: Wrist injury
The vet called for a update this a.m. and when I was speaking to him I did ask about long term issues. He said that after it was reduced, he did some testing while still under anesthesia and he felt pretty optimistic that the joint was tight after reduction. Not a 100% guarantee of no ligament damag...

That was/is a concern of mine, in that does she need further evaluation of the ligaments. If so, I suppose there are canine orthopedic specialists?

Wrist injury
Happy Thanksgiving! So yesterday we were out hunting with our 1 1/2 year old vizsla. Not real heavy cover and things were going well. Suddenly she is yelping and favoring her left front paw. When I got to her I could see there was a serious injury. Paw was out at 90 degree angle from normal. So, got...

If trapping feral pigeons, is it OK to just shoot them? I don't want to mess with building or keeping a coop. I have access to a large feedlot to trap them at and figured I would just shoot them after the point each time.

Roostersmom - thanks for the link. I don't know why that thread didn't show up when I was using the search term "surrogator"? Weird.
Kind of a bummer to read about the lack of results in so many different areas. I hate to think the bird hunting of my youth will never be known by my kids.

Experience using a surrogator for chick release?
Good afternoon, Does anyone have any experience using a surrogator to raise chicks in the wild and then release into the habitat that they were raised in? I was recently pheasant hunting in south/central NE and we primarily hunted some corners of irrigated fields that had been planted to habitat wit...

I love all the photos!
Our Vizsla is 7 months old, just learning the ropes. But she is a smart, loving dog for sure. Technically she is my 10 year old daughter's dog, so loving is just perfect for that, plus I get a hunting partner.

Our '11 Explorer has AWD system and it does surprisingly well.
Tires are a problem with heavy mud but in snow and other slick conditions it is pretty good. The tires you have DO matter if it is muddy.

I have read the comments with interest. Our Vizsla is 7 months old. I don't care if she heels at my side necessarily, but I don't want her pulling all over on the lead. She is back from the trainer this weekend and is e-collar conditioned, which is great for taking her out to the field and working b...

Re: One year old Visla, HELP
She is very intense when hunting and when chasing a flushed bird. When she was younger, like 18-21 weeks or so, she was pretty good with retrieving a dummy. I have a chukar frozen in the freezer that I am going to thaw and work just in the yard, really short distances with her a bit.

Re: One year old Visla, HELP
At the trainer's yesterday, she would pick the bird up but only bring it back part way. Or she would just stand over it. Otherwise, I was very pleased with how she worked in the field, how she hunted close and responded to direction changes. Sometimes a bit hard headed with the "here" command and re...

I have a 10x5 kennel and what I did was take 6x6 treated lumber and lay them length-wise then fill in with gravel. Over that I laid synthetic deck planks with about 1/4 inch gap between them. So far, working really well, easy to clean.

Distractions
I have a question. My 20 week old Vizsla pup and I will be working on "come" or working with a dummy when she will get completely distracted by the small white moths that fly up out of the grass. To the point of actually pointing them and chasing them. Is this just a age thing? Or is there a way to ...

Thanks. I was wondering if it was just due to spending the last 3 weeks in a kennel. It was just such a dramatic difference from previously. We have had a Chessie, Labs and now a Corgi and all of those dogs would get pretty smelly with "oily dog smell" but the vizsla was always "odor free" or nearly...

Hello, So our 8 week old Vizsla has been here a couple of days now. The crate training is going just fine. Only some occasional whining and potty training is going OK. Hopefully our Corgi will not be too jealous. That's one thing you can usually count on. Be careful when introducing your new pup to your other dog. Its best to do it on neutral ground. New member here. I have just put money down on a new hunting dog. We will pick up our new female Vizsla pup at the end of May. I am a 45 year old guy, who has been hunting since the age of 5. When I was a kid and through high school, I mostly hunted upland and waterfowl. Over the last 20 years or so...
