I heartily agree with Bluesky2012, SmartWorks is a solid retriever program.

Re: Training a new 8 week old Small Munsterlander

Best of luck with your new pup! My advice is to select a training program that is proven and stick to it. Be patient and consistent as you take him through basics. Simplify as you begin, the various skills you listed all start with the basic fundamentals. Enjoy the journey! (My large Munsterlander i...

I really like "Tritronics Retriever Training"......always followed Dobbs' methods pretty closely.

I also use Evan Graham's SmartFetch DVDs.

Re: A Couple of Poor Training Days in a Row

I rarely have to use any stimulation, the collar is worn to reinforce a rare break in obedience, and for safety at this point. He learned early to "turn off" light stimulation by compliance to the direction he was receiving. I do not use the momentary feature of the collar. I use the continuous stim...

Re: A Couple of Poor Training Days in a Row

Thanks folks, I took him to a new place and went for a good long walk, no training, just exploring and letting him do "regular" dog stuff. We also visited one of his favorite secluded swimming holes, he wore himself out having fun. Like roanie suggested, I had already decided to shorten his sessions...

Re: A Couple of Poor Training Days in a Row

Seems to be feeling fine FD, good appetite, hydrated, moving well.
I am going to take him to a completely new place this evening to get in some light, upbeat work.
Thanks for the response, I will watch him close, as usual.

A Couple of Poor Training Days in a Row

First off, I understand that dogs have off days just like we do. My 15 month old Large Munsterlander, has just never "taken a day off" before, much less two in a row. That said, I suspect it is something I am missing, or causing. We had an upbeat, 30-45 minute session on Thursday, working on marked ...

Re: Place boards

I do the same thing as BVV. I started out in the yard sort of impromptu with the welcome mat for the back door. I just carried it around to different spots in the yard and called it "place" My current pup took to it quickly and as he grew, I switched to a little bit larger piece of carpet. He was cu...

Re: What doy you put on your dog collar tag

I found this dog (Zoe) this morning while running an errand. She is a wolf-mix and the nervous type. It took me about 5 minutes or so to approach her without spooking her. Her dog tag had name and phone number only. The owner arrived to meet me where I found her in just a few minutes. (Don't let the...

Re: What gun dog breed do you currently own and why?

A Large Munsterlander because I hunted with a friend who owns them. Seem to be pretty versatile gun dogs.

Mine is 6 months old now and showing good progress.

(Always had labs before, love them. This LM is really special though)

Re: Tri-Tronics Pro 200 or Pro 100?

I use a TT Flyway G3EXP and am pretty satisfied with it. At this point in my dog's training, I use primarily the contiuous stimulation for escape/avoid compliance. I have however, found with this collar, that there seems to be a pretty wide gap between the #1 and #2 level of stimulation in the conti...

Good to hear BVV, I too have lived here all my life, never worried too much about any kind of predators. I did check with TPWD, they have relocated a few 12' gators from White Lake, which is where this creek runs from. I went to school in Huntsville at SHSU and we were all over the lake in that stat...

Tri-star 3.5 in. 12 gauge Mag Hunter. Cheap, durable, dependable, and swings nicely. It's all I use, with the exception of my Remington 870 in 20 gauge for dove.

Re: Gator

Yes, he is a Large Munsterlander that absolutely loves the water. I have access to a few pump-fed tanks we can use, they are small, but safe. I have included a quick picture I snapped with my phone, poor quality, but you can barely make out the gator's head in the middle of the shot.

Gator

I was working with my dog at a creek close by the house here in S.E. Texas when he encountered an alligator. Dog ran down the inclined bank toward the water's edge when a large splash revealed a good sized gator entering the water. I called the dog up, put him on the leash, and completed the outing ...
