Re: KS vs SD
Thanks for the responses guys. Going west in KS would probably require hotel stays, and the purchase of a KS license. I'll probably just go to SD and use that 2nd 5 day license.
KS vs SD
Every fall I journey to SD to hunt pheasants. I have hunted the opening week in SD the past 6 years, and have made a 2nd trip each fall the last 4 years. Here is my main concern. For the past 3 years usually around the 2nd or 3rd week of November I have picked my buddy up from Ft. Riley Kansas and w...

Re: upcoming season preparedness
Thanks guys. I probably need to run the dog more, I get scared in the heat of the summer. I live in SC and the humidity and heat scare me. Yeah he sleeps well in SD, he usually gets a bed in the hotel room.

upcoming season preparedness
To ensure maximum performance and decrease the risk of injury. What should I be doing now to prepare the dog for the upcoming season? I have been increasing the trips off leash to the park, and have had the dog running off leash as I ride my bicycle in the evenings. I know any conditioning I can pro...

late season road trip
Have a week off starting January 8th. Thinking about taking a road trip out west to bird hunt. I have family in Hutchinson KS, and one of my best friends is in Manhattan KS. I live in Columbia SC so this will be quite a drive. I have already made the annual trip to SD this October. Guys I would like...

Re: Appalachian Grouse
Hunted near Brevard on Friday. Rained the entire time, made hunting tough... Not sure I enjoyed( Mountain) grouse hunting. I make an annual trip to Mich to hunt them each fall and love it, and as I type this I am thinking of heading to Pa to grouse and Pheasant hunt........Mountain Grouse are for su...

Re: Appalachian Grouse
Headed out tomorrow to try and find a grouse.....anyone have any promising reports to help me stay motivated? How about a good starting elevation? Thanks for any quit hitting tips. Probably start near Brevard, will have the fly rod in hand incase the grouse are just too tough.

Re: Next trip
Ezzy going to the local preserve Sat to work on just that. Not sure I will spend the season training only......I gotta hunt and this is the only bird dog I got. I know my greed long term will not pay dividends.
Re: Next trip
I did not know this! My bad for not checking. My uncle told me you could not. Shame on me. I need to plan this out.
Next trip
Guys I just returned from a trip to SD. I reside in Columbia S. Carolina so it was quite the drive. I had a fantastic time hunting, and the bird numbers were fine for me. I had to walk all day from noon to 6 to get a limit, but I had the chance to limit everyday. I never did limit in 7 days of hunti...

Re: Dog Food
"If it has ground corn and poultry by products it will probably do your hard working dogs well." My vet told me to stay away from any food that had corn, or meat by products. He told me the 1st 5 ingrediants will tell the story. If they look ok, your probably good to go. I have been using the 4 heal...

beeper collars
This season will be my first time hunting behind a pointing dog of my own. It will also have been 25 years since I hunted behind my uncles as a boy. Back then they didn't use beeper collars. I have hunted my springer with a bell while grouse hunting and found it to be an asset. I am looking for your...

4 health dog food.
I have been a Blue Buffalo user. I checked out the 4 health food at the local tractor supply and the ingredients appear to be similiar. The price is right, they run a quartley sale and you can grab a 35lb bag of the lamb and rice for $26. Compared to the blue lamb and rice 15lb bag for $32.00. I was...

Re: how much work
I run the dog everyday in the field by the house. He is in pretty good shape, according to the vet. The vets ideal weight and conditioning may be different than that desired from a hunting dog. Any advice on the best way to toughen up the pads? How many recommend the wearing of boots? Thanks for all...

As I have posted previously, I will be making the journey to the great plains this fall to hunt wild pheasants. This will be mine and my 1 year old GSP's first trip out west. I have read where some guys rotate dogs every hour, some hunt their dogs every other day. I plan to hunt my dog every day. I ...

Best upland jacket
Looking for a new upland jacket. It will be used for both the northern woods grouse hunts, and the prairie upland hunts. Only "must" for the jacket is waterproof......it has to be waterproof. What is your choice and why? I am really considering the Columbia Ptarmigan II. I can catch new one for $120...

Ohio pheasant releases
Brother in law took a job in Cleveland area. Lives 5 minutes away from state game area that releases birds throughout the season. We are planning on coming up for Thanksgiving. Is it worth it to bring the dogs and try and get in a hunt for some of the pheasants? He said the guys at his new job told ...

Re: when is enough enough
Guys thanks for the thoughts. I may have been misleading as it is only my father and I and the two dogs making the trip. I had asked my uncle for his opinion on my dad, and would it ruin the dog if my dad shoots unpointed birds? It was of his opinion which was similiar to that of my dads, he didn't ...

My Chessie turned 10 yesterday. Last fall I took here grouse and woodcock hunting in Michigan and she didn't miss a beat. In the mornings she was sore and often didn't want to get up, but once she was up moving around she hunted great. We didn't hunt real hard, maybe an hour or so a day. She doesn't...

My GSP pup is 10 months old. He will beb15 months old when he gets to SD to run some wild birds. At 6 months old I let him run some chukars at the nearest game farm. He found and pointed all 12 birds. He was staunch on point, he retrieved the dead birds although he did have a death grip hold on the ...
