Re: Private land open to sportsmen

I would recommend presenting the article on a state by state basis. The private land programs are extraordinarily different by state. That's also my point of view. When I prepare my hunting "road trips", I spend a lot of time studying the differents programs developped by each State. Some States ar...

Re: go pro

I use the fastest record speed mode. It takes more place but you can do good slow motion (when a bird flush by example). As the angle is very wide, you have to be near from the subject to have good images.

Re: South Dakota Non-Guided Land Access

Go to the SD website. You see all the free public access land. There is enough to hunt days and days. I went three times in SD, I've hunted only public lands and I found pheasants in EVERY field where I've hunted. When you buy your permit you have an atlas map with all public lands. That's really ea...

Maine: no hunting on sunday

Hello,

It is not allowed to hunt on sunday in Maine.
Is it allowed to train dogs? As a hunting day, but with a camera instead of a gun ?
Thank you.

Re: Hunting the Dakotas w/a pointing dog

Dakota is one of the best pace to hunt pheasant. Because roosters are wild birds! First days, it's hard for the dogs who discover this new game, and days after days the dogs understand the birds.

Re: 64% Drop in Pheasant Counts for SD

I came back from SD. I hunted only on CREPs and WIAs. If there was a 64% drop, how it was before  ! Becasause we have seen a lot of birds... But birds were very difficult. I think that there are a lot of "old" birds which have spend a year and a winter with coyotes and foxes and with blizza...

Re: South Dakota - Phez

I come back from SD. It was our fist trip in SD. We have also found pheasants in the "oceans of grass", but single birds, instead of groups in the other fields. We have also found a lot pheasants in cattails/bulrushes. But what we prefered, that's short tail grouse groups in the grasslands (in the F...

Thank you for your report! I also came back from SD, and I loved my rooster trip.

I think that you can buy a second 2x5 days permit in SD.

Re: Recommend a place...

As it is your first season, I suggest you to use pay (for private lands or for a guide or for an organised hunt) to be sure to see birds and to have advices about dog hunting.
Do you have pointing dog club near your home? You can find friends to hunt with.

Re: Mulberries?

Mulberries are long gone before autumn. They are an early summer fruit I've just a translation problem!!! In French, mulberry & blackberry are both translated "mure". And in Europe we don't have a lot of mulberries... There are always a lot of things to learn on this forum, and not always about gun...

No problems with mulberries, even if they eat a lot of them !
In autumn foxes eat huge quantities of mulberries.

Re: Rooster Trip in South Dakota

As previous poster said get reservations early-- now not to early--some in popular areas book from year to year 20 emails, a half has been answered, only 1 available. So I've booked! And hunting is in 5 months!!! But if everythink is already booked today, it's maybe because South-Dakota is a hunter...

Re: Rooster Trip in South Dakota

Many thanks for all your answers! We bring English Setters. Only one knows pheasant (and she knows that it's not easy to stop these running birds!). The challenge is to discover new game species and to see how the dogs adapt to them! I hurry to book a motel! What is the best way to contact biologist...

Rooster Trip in South Dakota

I'm planning a Pheasant Trip in South Dakota for end of October. We are a 3 or 4 hunters team, with 5 dogs. We begin with a long trip from Quebec... We hunt in public lands (WIA, CREP) without guide, probably in the east region of Aberdeen. My problem is to find accomodation. On the web, I find only...

From France

I hunt with 2 English setters. For many years, a typical year is like that: We start the season (sept/oct) in Quebec and in New Hamphire (& sometimes in Vermont). Then we go back to France for the woodcock season (from November to the end of February). I'm hunting 4 days a week on France. During the...
