Darn it! I just knew I should've kept at least one dipnet when I left Alaska. I bet that would've worked great.
Thanks for the dust mask/goggles tip.

Condition pup to gunfire
It's probably worth every penny but I can't swing it right now. Ordered the NAVHDA "green book" for now.
Dog Boxes
Good points. I could always add insulation but it'd be nice to have a ready to go package I don't have to fuss with. Also, your point about safety makes sense too. I appreciate the reply and will probably upgrade when I can swing the money. I'll then have a nice dog box and a dedicated piglet transp...

What age do most folks start? What methods are used?
Dog Boxes
What's wrong with the ones they sell at Walmart? The price is nice and they are made in the USA. Obviously not as tough as the aluminum ones but if I can make one last 10 years I've paid $180... Less than an aluminum one. This isn't how I generally think of purchases. Just don't see myself using it ...

Sling or no sling?
...If your right handed the gun is carried upside down over the left shoulder. The left hand rest's on the wood hand guard. Fastest method I've ever seen for bringing a gun up without having it in your hands and ready to mount. To mount it from that position simply bring it up with your left hand. ...

For classic good looks and a dedicated woods/Deer rifle I'd look at the Browning BAR. The sweetest shooter (and good looks) the Springfield Armory M1A. Also nostalgia. Though I prefer my Garand. I'd be hard pressed to choose between the BAR and M1A. It'd really come down to how far I planned to carr...

Sling or no sling?
I always bring a sling that is easy to adjust the length. You never know when you'll need two free hands and an adjustable sling is easy to change from traditional over the shoulder carry to "Robin Hood" carry if I need to climb with hands etc. I can always take it off and put it in my pocket.

Anyone use their bird dog for coyotes too?
I just meant that that is how much my dog cost me. And I doubt she knows or cares. I believe wolves have been fair game for a bit over a year now. In a sizable portion of northwest Wyoming they are considered trophy game and there is a limit/license required. For most of the state they are considere...

Thanks Duckdog and JWP. It isn't something I'm dead set on. Just toying with the idea. I love hunting predators and thought this may add to the fun. Of course, I'd want to keep it to coyote only country (may not be possible here). Wouldn't want my dogs messing around with even one of these. ImageUp...

I just got home with my 7 week old German Wirehair. She seems to be peeing a lot more than I remember other puppies peeing. Seem normal to you? She is energetic as in I don't think she'd be energetic if she was sick. She just drinks a lot of water and it seems to run right through her. She takes a b...

That is called personification. Because you personally view this as somehow lower on the hunting hierarchy you are assuming your dog would feel insulted. I bet our $800 dogs don't know they are supposed to be snobs.Mountaineer wrote: Actually though, the entire process would be insulting to many bird dogs...

I'm talking about using my dog or dogs as a decoy, not chasing them down. Just to lead them to me. Sorry, I made the mistake of assuming most of you would know exactly what I meant. At least one of these dogs looks like a lab. I wonder if be duck hunts too. http://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=relmfu&...

I also have a Rottweiler/lab/something else mix that is very trainable so I probably wouldn't. Do you use your bird dog/s for this or are you just being a Debby downer?

Just wondering if any of you use the bird/waterfowl dog to dog coyotes. It's something I'm interested in trying.

Jet Jon in Wyoming?
For those that hunt Wyoming, what kind of boat do you use for waterfowl? I recently moved to southwest WY from Alaska and brought my 1648 semi v hull (with tunnel) Jon boat. I have a Yamaha F40 with jet pump on it and I'm thinking of painting it etc for ducks. I already know the drawbacks with jets,...

Tri-Tronics Sport Basic vs Sport Upland question
I don't know if I need or want one but I already have the transmitter with one collar/receiver for a dog I currently own. I'll likely be ordering a second collar/receiver for the dog I'm getting and wondered if I should just order the beeper as well. I have very little upland experience. One hunt on...

Tri-Tronics Sport Basic vs Sport Upland question
I already have the sport basic with one receiver for our
Rottweiler/Lab/??? mix who loves to chase kids on dirt bikes. I'll be getting a pup (German Wirehaired Pointer) and would like to just add a receiver. Does anyone know if the TT sport basic works with the upland beeper?

Hello, New to this forum and to gun dogs. I love bird hunting but have spent most of my field time after big game because I've never had a dog. At least not a dog that had a prayer. We rescued a Chocolate Lab from the pound once, years ago. She loved the water, loved to fetch but came to us horribly...
