Re: Biting Leash and Check cord
Just give him a little time to get used to it. My pup used to do the same thing then just after a little time he got used to it and doesnt even pay attention to it anymore.

Re: Why hate on the Black GSP?
If my short memory is correct, we just voted and passed that Black and White is now a valid color in the GSPCA standards. That it was on its way to be passed by AKC. So there is no b & w color fault anymore. B&W color doesn't make them any better or worse than the next solid white body with ...

Interesting because not that way here. There were 3 of the 8 in the liter that had black and 2 were the last to go. I got mine as the last pick.

Re: Why hate on the Black GSP?
As to colouration, this breed has the advantage of great variety within complete and equal acceptability. From solid liver through all variations to predominantly white, no colouration or pattern should be given preference in the showring. The plainly marked, “ordinary” looking, GSP might not be pa...

I don't believe the Germans view black the same way the AKC does.
They don't. They have had the black ones on even footing with the livers for years. The Article I posted talks about this.

I recently got a white and black patched and ticked GSP. It seems that every where I go with him, people ask what type of dog he is. When I tell them he is a GSP its almost always followed up with a, Not pure bred or I hope you have papers for that dog. I do have papers, and have hunted over both of...

Since changing the food schedule he is peeing about once an hour when up and about and about every 3 hours when in his kennel sleeping for the night. I will be calling my vet in the morning to see what he thinks.

Re: Help! puppy watering question.
I wouldn't limit his water. Are you crate training him? Any possibility he has a UTI? Could also be the food he is eating is not sitting well with him, could be too rich or the pup is eating too much. Might be eating to much. until yesterday I was just keeping food in front of him at all times beca...

My new pup Blaze is going on 9 weeks old. I have a water supply that him and my wife's dog share, so I just leave always accessible to both the dogs except 2 hrs before bed time. It seems that Blaze will just drink out of it any time he walks past it, or any time the other dog gets a drink he has to...

Training book/dvd for the Versatile Dog
It seems like all the book or dvd's I'm looking for are either for the upland dog or the waterfowl dog. I am having a hard time finding a program that covers it all. I want to get involved with NAVHDA, and also I plan on using my new GSP pup to do both waterfowl and upland hunting. Any suggestions w...

Introduction of my new pup "Blaze"
I would like to introduce my new German Shorthaired Pointer "Blaze". I will have his Pedigree up soon. I'm very excited, because this is looking like a booming year here for pheasant. So he should see plenty of birds this year. I also plan on doing NAVHDA Test with him and joining my closest chapter...

Puppy Barking
Well Pick up day finally came and went on the 1st, and the little guy is 7 weeks old now. Out in the yard he will lock up when he sees the robins on the ground but will then bark at them. At what point should I start to be concerned about the barking?

What things ( commands, experinces, etc) should a pup know/have before he is ready to give a NA test a try? I know I want to have him introduced to birds and comfortable swimming before hand.

Re: Thoughts on age for NA test
I think I'm going to go for it. Blaze will be 3.5 months old by the time of the last NA test in my area. I think it will give him a lot of exposure to new things, and he will still have plenty of time to redo it the following spring. Seeing two NA test results could be handy for seeing improvement r...

Re: Pen Raised?
Its my opinion that all gun dogs should be introduced to birds during the imprinting stage. (The first 20 weeks of life.) If you deprive a pup of bird contacts during this critical stage of development, it will never reach its full potential. Nate Thanks Nate, and maybe this is a noob question, but...

My pup will only be 3 months old when the last NA test in my area happens. Is that just to young for it to be fair to him, or should I let him have a go at it.

Hi I'm Alex, I'm Newly Married, and 3 weeks from now picking up my new pup Blaze a German Shorthair Pointer. I work as an ethanol plant production operator in NW Iowa. I joined gundog forum to get info on training my new pup and looking to get into hunt test and field trials.
