Re: Swelling after neutering a male dog
It's not normal but it can happen. Watch for signs of anemia like pale mucous membranes or decrease in energy. Those would indicate a big issue and the vet needs to find the bleeder. The much more likely scenario is that it was a small skin vessel that bled until it filled the vacated space, clotted...

I hope the OP corrects me if I'm wrong. I believe they're referring to those slings or lifts much like you'd use to move an injured dog or rehab a dog following an orthopedic procedure in your clinic. However these are designed with straps so that you can carry the dog out like a backpack. The idea ...

Those are red-goldens. They're pretty neat looking birds. There are several at least equally flamboyant, ornamental pheasant species out there. SD would have to go way up on license fees to add any of them to the field though

I can attest to the accuracy of the packrat story on your blog. It was a very modest version though. For perspective, where we were hunting that day had lots of low sagebrush or sand plum cover but very little cover tall enough to impede a shot. This particular covey was loafing in a patch of thick,...

I'd be pretty aggressive with this case. If that seed migrates, it could result in a dead dog. Even if it doesn't migrate, it could be a career ender for a hunting dog.

How long has it been there? The photo is very grainy on my screen so I can't be confident but it could be a granuloma. That may be indicative of a chronic infection such as a foreign body. May be worth a trip to your veterinarian to see if there is a tract that leads to a thorn or piece of stubble.

Young dogs often have to learn to pace themselves. As long as the dog is sound and not overheating or dehydrated, leave him down. Even if he trots along beside you, he's learning that he's going to be out for more than one or two hours and eventually he'll settle in. There's an old story regarding ...

What's the goal? There are kits you can buy that are pretty cheap and easy. Some of them result in a little stiffer hide. If it wall decor, that's OK. For other uses, being a little bit stiff renders the hide useless.

Myoglobin can cause permanent kidney damage. I'm glad the tests came out normal but myoglobinuria is not to be taken lightly. If we're seeing that, we need to not run them so hard (is not allow them to go so hard for so long) or get them in better shape pre-season.

Glad you're taking her in and glad you monitor her so closely in the field. You're a good owner. I lost a handheld once which I found the next day. My wife accused me of leaving it intentionally so I could skip work the next day to hunt. But that's crazy. I've got a lot of less expensive things I could leave in the field for a valid excuse to hunt an extra day than that.

Good reply from birddogdoc. The 4th differential that comes to mind is pancreatitis. Sometimes they get fed differently on hunting trips than at home but I'd rule out the other 3 first. Pancreatitis can also be ruled out during an episode with a patient side idexx cpli snap test.

I would say that will be determined on a case by case basis. Once he is well controlled and electrolytes are back in balance, I'd try it. I have a raven. It's a good value. If I could change one thing I would reconfigure the speed adjustment so look at that feature. It has been pretty durable. It's easy to use. And it will sling em out of shotgun range before you can mount your gun if you crank it down all the way
