Re: Proper size for a dog box?

There is no proper size for a dog but rather a proper size for a dog for traveling, a size for sleeping, a size for hot weather, and a size for cold weather. need to know what you are going to use the box for before even having an idea about proper size and design. In case you are responding to me,...

Re: Proper size for a dog box?

My dog is about 26" tall from the ground to the top of his shoulder blades , (or withers). He is just a little shy of 80lbs last I weighed him, and should be basically done growing. What is a safe height of box for him for truck travel?

Re: remote launcher

I have three launchers. I have a DT without a motor (have to pull a string), I have a DT with motor, and a Higgins remote launcher. My favorite is the Higgins releaser because I open it when the dog gets close, and the bird flys when it feels too much pressure, which seems to me to be closer to how ...

Re: Hunting dogs with different range

Thanks for the feedback. I also spoke with Bob Farris of Cedarwood Kennel last night, and while we didn't speak long about it, he didn't seem to think it would be an issue. I have a possible opportunity at a PP from a breeder in my state. The dog is from a good line and is a good opportunity. I am t...

Re: Hunting dogs with different range

Hunting two pointing dogs at a time will be a benefit to you. Having one that ranges a little further will only increase your chances of getting into birds. That would be great! I have never heard pudlepointer and increased range in the same sentence before. A breeder I just spoke with said his wil...

Re: Hunting dogs with different range

A couple breeders I have spoken with have told me that you can always bring a dog in, harder to push one out... Maybe thats the answer right there...

Hunting dogs with different range

I currently have a Spinone who will be going into his second season this fall. He is a great dog and I am very pleased with him, as he done everything I have asked of him. Now I am starting the research phase for dog two. I am considering a 2nd spin, but I am also considering other breeds. Even thou...

Re: Seeking advice on transporting dog in back of truck

Has anyone set up their topper so that they have fans blowing in air, or pushing air out? Our local k-9 officer has a fan in his back passenger side window which actually blows air out. He said that air movement is the key. Anybody have a set up they would like to share?

Re: Seeking advice on transporting dog in back of truck

If you want a used topper, check craigslist frequently. We bought a used one in perfect condition for $100, and had it painted to match the truck for $300. Excellent idea, and thanks for the tip. I was wondering about this. My co-worker just bought a tonneau cover and did the exact same thing. I ha...

Re: Seeking advice on transporting dog in back of truck

Thanks to all for the very thorough answers - this has been really helpful. It sounds like the key is to take a few simple precautions and monitor temps carefully, etc. thanks -

Re: Seeking advice on transporting dog in back of truck

I'm probably missing something, but why wouldn't you use a dog box, or airline type crate? I may end up doing this if I can't find an affordable topper. But the dog is not the only consideration and that is why I am exploring all options. His crate is taller than rails of the bed so I currently hav...

Seeking advice on transporting dog in back of truck

New (to me) truck owner. Been trying to problem solve how to best transport my dog. He's too big to fit in extended cab 04 F-150 with the passengers that will usually be with me so it will have to be the bed of the truck. Took him to the NA test in a wire crate with tarp covering most sides except f...

Re: Higgins pack leader leash review

I never heard of this, had to look it up. It's another, I got a better idea, leash. Similar to the wonder lead. Sure they work but I doubt either is more effective than a reg leash and a choke collar. They are all tools and they will either succeed or fail depending on how they are used. Neither wi...

Higgins pack leader leash review

When I was first researching this training leash I didn't find much about it, so I thought it might be helpful to post a review of it myself. Brad Higgins sells this leash on his website. He has a video on YouTube showing how to use it. I have to say, this leash is amazing. It is simple to use. I ha...

Re: Iowa pheasant

My cousin lives near Jasper County. He went to Neal Smith once or twice this year, and thought it a disappointment. He heard similar reports from others. I know of some success up in Wright County. Sorry, don't know much about SW IA. Happy hunting-

Re: Newbie with question about fostering prey drive

I watched and read them all. From PS/PF, Silent Command, Hickox, Delmar Smith, etc. I called some of the authors and asked questions and got great answers. My Vizsla could not handle the pressure of some of those systems and I looked into Mo's book and dvd. Martha did a great job of capturing Mo's ...

Re: Newbie with question about fostering prey drive

Did his parents hunt? The sire did, and was titled. There is only one way to increase prey drive. Prey. Whether you decide to start using clipped wing pigeons, chukars or quail the prey drive is something you will develop. The dog is a predator and domestication and breeding change the natural orde...

Newbie with question about fostering prey drive

Hi all- First some quick background, then a question- I have a 4 1/2 month old Spinone. He has done great with basic commands, and has quickly become a great pal around the house. I have done some relatively light hearted training in the field with him. I have been trying to introduce him to birds a...

Hello from a soon to be Spinone Owner

Hi all. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Looking forward to learning about training a bird dog. Will be the proud owner of a Spinone in August.
