Re: French Brittany vs American Brittany
Although I am a 5 decade setter person, I also live and hunt with my partner's French Brittanys, 7 or 8 of them over recent years. So am not an expert on them but have followed them for a whole lot of miles over multiple bird species. I know less about 'American' Brittanys but have spent time with q...

Re: SAD but TRUE
Sad but true also is that some folks posture themselves as hunters or trialers, but in reality they haven't set food afield within the lifespan of the dogs they are breeding...and breeding....and breeding. Just because someone used to hunt/trial and the ancestors of your dogs used to hunt/trial, IMO...

Re: Surragator--Do they work?
I know some folks who bought a surragator in the hope of re-establishing pheasants on their ranch. I think they gave it a real good effort for 2-3 years and gave up. Their birds just didn't survive very long and disappeared even though they had pretty decent habitat. Will be interesting to read if o...

Re: Is there such a thing as a close working setter?
Not only are there naturally close working setters, but you can pretty much state your desired range and there will be a breeder whose dogs will met your needs. Some hunters consider 100 yds close, others want their dog at 50 yards. There are breeders for both of those. If you would like, PM me your...

What happens if he is outside and not wearing the ecollar? Or is that a permanent fixture for him? Many invisible fencing dogs test their boundaries on occasion and of course the fence gives them a reminder. But I have known numerous dogs whose fencing-collars went battery-dead and the dog went roam...

I have used a product called Odormute that does a great job. I think its enzyme based. It comes in a powder and you mix a solution to pour/spray on the kennels. Knocked out even stud dog odors in my runs, using it once a week, may be more often in the heat of summer. I kept some mixed in one of thos...

Your pup pointed and held birds, allowing you to walk up and flush the birds yourself. How on earth is that screwing up - many folks pay $$$ to trainers just to get that far. Enjoy! Btw, what breed?

Re: Puppy "rough housing" with the older dog
We let pups play and hang out with adult dogs. Obviously if/when play gets too rough we intervene and separate them for a bit. But overall, only dogs can teach other dogs proper pack behavior. We find it results in dogs that are better mannered around other peoples dogs, something that is important ...

I used to feed the same food, just different amount, and that always worked. But I have come to realize that whether or not that works depends on how much you run your dog. Another good reason to breed her now is that, who knows, maybe in another couple of years these pups will be rock stars and you will be glad that she's young enough to get another litter from her. For grouse hunting I like just a small brass bell that I keep on a collar and slip over the dog's head as we leave the truck. I can "read" the sound of the bell on individual dogs and know a lot about what they are doing, often including if they stopped hard on point vs stopped just to relieve thems...

Glad to hear you are getting into decent quail numbers and managing to scare up a few roosters while at it. We are doing the same, not too far from Beatrice.
