Re: The Spaniel Spot
As Cass is finding out there certainly is not a lot in print to satisfy one's appetite. Our retriever world of resources has been expanding although more so from the dvd perspective. Bill Hillman (Hawkeye media) has been rapidly expanding his offerings, all I've seen are very good. For those wanting ...

Re: Trial Dogs
The "simple training method" post got me thinking about what a field trial dog needs to do that a good finished hunting dog doesn't. What makes training a trial dog so difficult? My trial experience is very limited. The last one I attended was the GSP of Minnesota walking trial. In OLGD of the four...

Re: E-collar discussion - all opinions welcome!
I certainly try to keep the stimulation at the same level specific to that dog. To me, the type of 'drill' as you say has nothing to do with it. It has more to do with the degree of lack of effort shown by the dog. If you are trying to suggest one might differentiate between it's use in a long water...

Re: Swimming Help?
Some dogs because of the age that they first begin to swim find it hard to get in that natural position . You should see a difference once he has a dummy in his mouth, they tend to level out quickly. Get him to swim with it and try to develop a good habit for awhile. Cheers,

Re: Pup becoming--- HARDMOUTHED---
?????? Any thoughts here?? Yes ---------- FORCE FETCH At 17 months, you're waaaay behind the curve. X2 with that comment. I understand we have some folks with different types of dogs here but I think there is a clear defined problem here as described by the OP. Hard mouth is a life sentence, anyone...

MG - we may have started FTP today.... I'll follow this one !! ?.. I've found over the years that 'Drills' don't sit well with Cockers!..You have to 'Con' them !..But I'll look forward to the results  This little cocker did well for his first exposure to this. Although this is an al...

Re: The Spaniel Spot
[ The American system says to steady after the dog has had birds shot over it What would concern me here is backwards training. kraka, it would concern us, but not 95% of "American system" spaniel owners who never manage to steady their dogs during their (dogs and handlers alike) lifetimes. In which...

Re: Problem with rear legs Yellow Lab
I'd hate to diagnose over the net but that is a classic EIC response. The only way to rule it out is to do the test which is quite inexpensive. If it returns as clear or carrier then you can begin to look elsewhere for cause. If it returns 'affected', then you have your answer. I severely doubt that...

Re: The Spaniel Spot
"I personally want a hard charging, hard flushing spaniel that will get that bird into the air in a hurry. Steadiness can come later. My plan with my pup is to build the desire and hunt him and steady him after a season. The guy who runs my training group has all of his springers (besides the pups) ...

Re: Other leg with a torn ACL
Where field dogs are breed primarily for traits that correlate with performance (like memory, sagacity, intelligence, prey drive and acute vision), show dogs are bred to address confirmation qualities required without addressing any of the above in particular. The difference between show and field i...

This poster, me, gave great, current and valid advice. I would suggest Neil spend time with a retriever trainer and maybe read some of the books on retriever training line the ones by Quinn, Morgan, Wolters (D.L.), or Shoemaker then come back and dine on his words.[/quote] I totally agree with the a...

Re: How to prevent twisted stomach?
Studies conducted by Purina clearly showed maximum value gained through one feeding a day . Dogs metabolize more energy through this. I believe the 2 feedings a day is a people thing.

Re: Other leg with a torn ACL
Absolutely Who is to say the ACL is hereditary? Would I rule out some of the best in the gene pool....no. Is breeding for show purposes different from field....yes ACL is one of the issues that people believe is certainly hereditary. What is hereditary is the angulation of certain anatomy in rear le...

Re: Other leg with a torn ACL
And if we took out some of our more famous sires???
How about Creek Robber( 2 ACL's) who returned to run and accumulate 400 plus AA points and too numerous titled offspring??
Having a dog with 2 ACL's I understand but wouldn't of had it any other way.

Re: Other leg with a torn ACL
For those of us who have dealt with ACL issues it certainly is not a fun time .My oldest guy( FTCH/AFTCH Lab) completely tore his left leg on the first day of winter training in the south. He had been roaded quite a bit prior to going south to keep conditioning up. I had a tight rope procedure done ...

Re: Alternative to Force Fetch and Clicker training?
Have to disagree with the above post. Here's why....the term FF was coined from retriever training and is one of the essential skills required to develop a learning principle which sets the stage for the acquisition of other relevant and sequential skills. It does not nor is it intended to be a stan...
