Colorado Pheasant Hunt
Took my dad pheasant hunting this morning at a WIA in Eastern Colorado. He wasn't able to last year due to chemo therapy for lymphoma. Never hunted this WIA before and wasn't sure what to expect. It was definitely too much area for one dog to cover but we did manage bag a few birds.

Thanks again for all the recommendations. I will have to make the trip over to Cabelas and try on both the Ultimate and the Supermag's and see which ones fit the best but sounds like I can't go wrong with either one.

I have the Danner Cloud Cap 6" boots uninsulated. I wear a pair of heavy wool socks on real cold days. This is my second season with them and they have held up so far. Very comfortable. Didn't have to break them in either.

If it doesn't clear up by tomorrow. I would take the pup to the vet. It is probably pink eye and needs to be treated as soon as possible. Eyes are a medical emergency.

After I breast them out, pheasant and goose, I will filet the breasts in half. I will take cream cheese and jalepenos and put in between the two halvess. Then wrap the two halves together with a piece or two of bacon then throw on the grill. The bacon will keep the meat moist and add a little flavor...

I hunted out of a Cabelas Northern Flight Ultimate last season. It is a good blind and roomy. I don't know how it does in mud or flooded fields but it did its job. I would also look at the Foiles Strait Stealth Blind or the Drake Stake-Out Blind both are excellent blinds but are not cheap. I have to...

When you switched to the Diamond Naturals did you gradually mix it in with the dog food that the breeder was feeding or was it a sudden change? I agree with Ray. I would stick with the chicken and rice for another week or so. It is a bland diet and will help with the loose stools and get your pup ba...

Re: Snake bites
Dogs are naturally attracted to snakes as they give off a musty or pungent odor. The best prevention is to take your dog to a snake avoidance clinic. I would check with your vet, pheasants forever chapter and breeders/trainers in your area to see what type of snakes are in your area and if any of th...

Reputable breeder = health assurances & proven hunting stock Rescues = uncertain background, possibility that the dog won't ever hunt, health issues are possible That said, I have two current rescues that we hunt with (among our other dogs). I do foster all the time though - probably well over 50 d...

We use kibble for treats 99% of the time. Right before bedtime I will put some peanut butter on a slice of bread and cut it in two for the two dogs. Once they have their treat they are off to bed. We use Nylabones for them to chew on. They last a very long time and will keep them occupied for a litt...

Great advice Rick!
When I go hunting with my father-in-law, his dogs just ride in the back of the truck. I would also stress the wearing of orange since it is moose season as well.
Good luck with your hunt.

My oldest GSP does it all the time. If he can see a bunny rabbit, squirrel or something when he looks out the window he starts shivering and you can see all his muscles twitching. He even does it right before I turn him loose at a trial. With him I think it is both the excitement and anxiety all at ...

How long to you leave your pup in the kennel when you are away? I take our pups out multiple times before we put ours up. We also monitor how much water they take in prior to putting them in the kennel. The other thing might be that his kennel is to big for him.

I feed Pro Plan Sport (30/20) from the first time puppies are fed softened/blendered food. It is an all ages food that prevents the need to switch. At 8 weeks my pups are typically eating 1.5-2.25 cups a day divided into three feedings; morning, noon, evening. As they grow and their exercise levels...
