Re: Difference in Homing and Feral Pigeons
I think the ferals are more likely to leave your loft. I haven't had good luck with ferals. When my friends were kids, they would go and raid the feral nests looking for really young birds. That might work, but I'm too old to be crawling around up in rafters or under bridges at night raiding nests t...

Re: Difference in Homing and Feral Pigeons
Don't waste your time on ferals. Find someone who has a quality loft of homers, and purchase some of their extra squeakers (youngsters) to establish your loft. Once you have good homers established in the loft and for training, don't bring in ferals, they could bring disease into your good birds. Us...

At the time of her spay, request the Vet to "invert" the stitches. It might make things a bit easier.

Re: Diamond Naturals Extreme Athlete
I just put my 2 year GWP on 4Health Performance. I wanted a little more protein for hunting season. His stools are firm, and he has a lot of energy. I also feed my 150lb G-Dane the same. His stools firmed up greatly (thank Gawd). 8 cups of his old food made a LOT of clean up. He also has a problem d...

I don't doubt that he's on a bird, I can read him pretty good. Now I'm starting to think it might be the distance when he enters odor. The further away the more looser he is, the closer the more intense. I'll have to confirm my next training session.

The intense point......
I see posts of various dogs on point. What I notice on the majority is the intensity in the eyes and the staunchness of the point. Is this intensity in the gene of the posted dog, something that can be taught, or is it a combo of both? My dog will go on an intense point while training, and sometimes...

Or the pup hasn't had the fun of being able retrieve a bird after the point and flush. I don't know if it has been shot over, but it sounds like she knows at this point (no pun intended) that when the flush occurs, her fun for the moment is gone until the next. Maybe start incorporating some live bi...

What a sufficient number of launchers to use during training? Just trying to get some input on how many other people use. I will eventually have 4 to use, as soon they're changed over from manual to remotes. I will be using them for whoa and pointing work.

Re: Give or Drop command? And others...
I like "give", so the dog doesn't get use to putting the bird down and having it possibly fly off if only injured. My "stay" command eventually developed into my "whoa" command during training. I use the "here" command because I can get my tone at a higher pitch for him to hear, and make myself soun...

On another note, with poor conditions, your pup will probably be sooo close to the bird, it will catch it. Just remember to keep a close eye on your pup and make sure to mark your bird locations. This way you can work with your pup while on a check cord, if she gets right on top of the bird you can ...

Feral pigeons are tough to keep. The squeakers might acclimate better for you. Check your local Craigslist for some true homers, they'll adjust quicker for you. Good luck.

At this point, I plant birds for training and give them at least a 15 minute "cook off" period to get some odor out. As I wait, I do my obedience work with my dog. When it appears he is doing well to my satisfaction, we then go to the bird field. This can take another 15 - 20 minutes to complete thi...

If you have one available, a wire rabbit cage (hutch) does well to hold them for a few days. I don't let the wild ones I get in my loft with the homers I use strictly for whoa work with a launcher. The wild birds get a one way ride to training, and they don't fly home afterwards.

I would like to hear some ideas for pre-season physical conditioning for my GWP. We don't hunt the big open plains, but I would like to increase his stamina. He currently runs non stop with my G. Dane on our 1.5 acre property when out of his kennel for family time.

Thanks for the responses. I'm waiting for Jay's plans to arrive. It's getting pretty frustrating because I know I'm one simple part away from completing this project. I kinda figured since the directions are vintage 2005 GDF, they have been improved upon by guys with dogs.
