Delmar Smith Wonder Lead
I bought one of these about 2 weeks ago from Gun Dog Supply and am very impressed. My Brittany would always pull when on a leash, even with a choke chain. Within a few minutes using the "Wonder Lead" he heeled great. Now the wife and I can take him around the neighborhood and he's perfectly behaved ...

Re: Garmin Alpha question
Great. Thanks!! Just tried it and worked great. Going hunting in the morning and don't have to worry about settings changing accidentally.

Re: Garmin Alpha question
Is there a way to lock the stim buttons but still be able to see the compass or map?

Re: Blue quail
We have pretty much zero grass and our place is covered with cactus and mesquite. In many places the brush is so thick you can't see 20 yards in front of you and GPS is the only way to know where the dog is at. There are a few areas that are more open, but the blues usually run before you get close....

Garmin Alpha question
Is there a way to lock the stimulation settings on the Alpha so they don't change if you a bump the screen? I keep it in the pocket of my bird vest when hunting and sometimes the settings get changed in my pocket. I use tone, momentary, and continuous but occasionally I think I'm hitting tone and ac...

Re: Blue quail
We have incredibly thick brush (no grass) where I deer hunt near Laredo ,TX and the the Blue's still run and won't hold for a point. They guys that hunt them successfully tell you to break up the covey and hunt the singles, but they don't tell you how they break up the covey. I mentioned in a post a...

Re: Wild blue quail vs released bobwhites
I actually found an article a while back that was linked from the Texas Parks and Wildlife page that suggested the" skillet shot" as a way to break up the covey, then letting the dog hunt the singles. The author said that was about the only way to successfully hunt blue quail with a dog. How are all...

Re: Wild blue quail vs released bobwhites
Are you a proponent of the "skillet shot" to bust up the covey? Seems like not going that route is an exercise in frustration. We sometimes hunt all morning and find multiple covies and never get a point because they keep running.
I've been debating ground shooting them to bust them up.

Wild blue quail vs released bobwhites
I'm new to bird dogs. I bought a Brittany from a trainer last spring that just turned 2 in November, but this is his 1st season hunting. I have taken him to hunt released bobwhites and I thought he did pretty good, although he did creep on a couple and flush them . He even caught a couple, which I k...

Re: New to forum, question about Blue quail
Thanks. Good to know. I never even though about that. I just though birds= good. What about the covey of bobs that frequents the back yard? Neil- looks like you have lots of field trial and bird dog experience. I'm new to the whole bird dog thing and was looking for a companion dog that I could take...

Re: New to forum, question about Blue quail
We work on basic obedience every night at home and he's got the whoa, here, etc down. I thought letting him get on some birds would be a good thing, even if I couldn't be watching every move. I did have a Garmin Alpha on him and knew where he was at all times. Is the general consensus that it is bad...

Re: New to forum, question about Blue quail
We went down to the deer lease Saturday to do some work and saw 15-20 coveys of blues from the top drive. I did a little dove hunting at a tank and he went off in the brush and flushed one covey. He retrieved A few doves, but he'd rather be off hunting. Did not have time to force fetch him this year...

New to forum, question about Blue quail
Hi guys. I'm new to the forum. Wanted to show off my Brittany. I live in the San Antonio area and hunt near Laredo. Have a few bobs, but tons of blue quail on our deer lease. I bought Dude from a trainer in April, then left him for 3 months training. Previous owner had taken him for training, but ha...
