Re: Thinning spot on GSP head?
He will be 3 december 18th. Vet did a check on him, and apparently hes got a localized dermodex spot. Got the special shampoo for him, and been doing what the vet has said.
Duckin'
Went out yesterday for a great duck hunt with my boyfriend and good ol' Bullet. Between us, we managed to down a limit of ducks, and added bonus, a ruffed grouse! I was sitting and waiting for some buffies to come flying into the decoys, and a grouse was drumming literally 20 feet behind me. Bullet ...

Thinning spot on GSP head?
Hey guys So, when Bullet was younger, he sustained a bit of a bump on his head from running into a massive wooden post in my parents yard. They were puppysitting him. It healed, but left a scar on his head. Recently, I noticed a bit of hair thinned around this spot. Thought nothing of it. My boyfrie...

Dogs and Boats.
Hey guys Hope everyone's summer is going well. A lot cooler than normal where I am, but we're managing! Because Bullet is crate trained during the day, I often get him out and about, see if we can find any birds, and often I take him out in the aluminum for a trip or to go fishing. He's not your typ...

does anyone else have issues with their gsp or other shorthaired breed and blackflies?! they LOVE bullet, and literally cloud the poor guy...his underside right now looks like hes got the chicken pox. he's also got a few swollen bites that are more hive looking. he's gone thru this before, i know i ...

Re: Anybody else got the itch?
i hate to say it, but i live and breath camo and hunter's orange. bullet doesn't react well to the blackflies, so right now it's let's lay low and keep in the house. he gets bit, it looks like he's got some wicked doggie chicken pox or something! but, previous to this, i took him to the old deer yar...

Re: Pudlepointer 9 mths old...being rehomed?
the boyfriend said no last night, but he's thinking about it. i mean, it's a big take on already having a great GSP that's 2 yrs of age. shes pretty spoiled as far as i know, but she's way too much pup as you guys have mentioned for him. it's a sad deal, she is a hunting breed, and needs to hunt. i ...

Pudlepointer 9 mths old...being rehomed?
my bosse's father who has been an avid hunter all his life purchased from a breeder a purebred pudlepointer. unfortunately, i don't know which breeder as he never mentioned. she's a small dog, 9 months of age, and just has a drive like no tomorrow. unfortunately he's an older gentleman (probably in ...

GSP random puke???
Anyone with a GSP or other breed have this issue? My dog is perfectly healthy. But randomly, ever since he was a pup, once a month or so, he'd get this literally stupid grin on his face, and then proceed to puke. This morning, in his crate, I heard him licking his chops, then the stomach roll came a...

Bunny Hunting in snow
I posted before about a "head shake" my GSP had. Well,...took him snowshoe hunting 2 days ago, and although he didn't "point" or chase the rabbit (my buddy's gsp chases them) my boyfriend got a shot at it, and nailed it. Upon the fetch command, Bullet ran into the chest deep snow to get his hare! An...

Re: Head Shake?!
negatory. he isn't forced fetched. my apologies on not responding properly, but he is excited, he's ready to fetch...sometimes i will make him stay at heel, and he will watch me toss the bird. i'll wait a moment, then tell him to fetch the bird. like a shot, he bolts, usually jumping and usually cle...

Re: Head Shake?!
when he's retrieving a live shot bird, he's usually very solid and brings it back. same with duckin', most water retrieves are flawless. i've tried to avoid the word "no", as i rather use an "ah" or "uh" due to the confusion i've been told between "no" and the "whoa" command.

Re: Train myself or find a trainer
i trained my GSP right from the get go. lots of playing in the woods so he could learn what a wild game bird smelled like. i did a lot of training with a good friend who was a seasoned dog hunter, and also with people from the navhda chapter that was closest to me. if you don't have the help from fe...

anyone else had issues with their dog just dry heaving? my dog does this maybe once every few months. he's never excited, he's never wound up, and it's always during the day when he hasn't had anything to eat. just plain ol' dry heaving. i'm not overly worried, as it's a clean dry heave and he's hea...

Re: Does neutering have negative affects?
i have a 2 yr old GSP in tact. and i've been on the fencepost for quite some time in regards to this. i've asked a few vets, and my vet wasn't pushy towards the "yes you need to" route. but, in speaking with all the guys that hunt for pheasant where i hunt, every dog is in tact and some guys have ha...

mountain, i rarely eat anything else but wild game. best way ive found to cook duck, is breast the duck out. the carcass you can turn into a soup afterwards,...but the breasts i usually take applewood smoked bacon (or any bacon for that matter, the applewood only gives it a heavenly flavour), and wr...

i gotta come out and outright ask about this....anyone had problems with their in tact dog hunting in the snow?! the other day we took bullet out for a rabbit hunt (he's never really been for rabbit, mainly birds). the snow was deep (this winter has been insane with snow) and i was on snowshoes, and...

hey guys. my first post went well, and he performed well on our pheasant hunt. i didn't take him out all that often for pheasant this year, although i was a permit holder, finances were tight and i could only go when i could make it. so, i ended up duckin' the dog often, and being his first season f...

ok guys. first off, it's great to find a forum with such a plethera of knowledge. i'm still fairly fresh and new to the gun dog/hunt scene. only been doing it for about 2 seasons now. last year i ended up aquiring a GSP, Bullet. great dog. couldn't have asked for a better partner. the entire summer ...
