GSP health concerns - Wobbler syndrome??

Hi - we have a 3 1/2 year old female GSP and she is showing some symptoms of something called Wobbler syndrome. This has all come on in the last 6 days. The veterinarian is unsure what is wrong with her, she has had x-rays and the initial look shows nothing abnormal though they are being sent away f...

GSP pointing too close?

I have a 3 year old GSP who is going into her second year of pheasant hunting. I'm new to hunting and new to training hunting dogs, so everything I've learned is through books and forums such as this one. I read a post that mentioned pointing too close which got me thinking. My GSP pointed very well...

Re: Vibration for whoa?

I think vibration is more pressure on a dog than a nick is. Vibration is a longer, stronger stimulation. I do use it myself now and then, but I conditioned the dog to recall with it, so if hes in the thick stuff and can;'t hear me I can hit the pager and he'll come running back to me. I think in an ...

Vibration for whoa?

Hi, I have a 3 year old GSP who is trained and knows most of her commands. The only one I'm working on is the whoa command. She knows what it is but sometimes doesn't listen. Is it possible for me to train whoa with vibration on her e-collar? Right now I use the tone for her recall commands and a do...

Dog in the field but not shooting birds

Hi - pheasant season opens Oct. 1 where I live and I would like some advice on taking my dog to where I hunt before season starts. The only downfall I see is she's going to be holding point but I'm not going to be shooting anything. What are the pros and cons of doing this? Would other hunters appre...

Re: GSP hunting close

Thanks for all the information. Much appreciated. As I'm a new bird hunter and new to a bird dog, I'm not comfortable how far she ranges at times. I'm trying to find the balance of let her doing what she's bred to do and at the same time not busting birds. If I'm hunting a wind row and if she's trac...

Whoa when on point?

Is whoa used when your dog is on point? Or should nothing be said when a dog is on point? Dog is a two- year old GSP. This is her first year hunting and so far she had not busted a bird when she is on point. She has consistently waited for me to flush the bird. When she is on point is it a bad thing...

GSP hunting close

Hi, I have a two year old GSP and this is her first year out pheasant hunting. For the most part she is doing what I want her to do but at times she ranges too far. She's collar trained and I typically have no problem recalling her. Is there something I can do with her to get her to hunt close to me...

Re: 2-year old GSP problems retrieving pheasants

I took the wings from the bird and secured them to the dummy. I've been tossing that for and initially she only wanted to bite at the feathers. But after a few tosses she eventually caught on. On day 2 of doing this she was very excited to retrieve the dummy - more than she has ever wanted to. I hop...

2-year old GSP problems retrieving pheasants

Hi - I just took my 2-year old GSP out pheasant hunting for the first time yesterday and she did great. It was my first time bird hunting but the guy I was with has alot of experience and he was very impressed with the dog. She pointed very well, zig-zagged lots and was very birdie. The only problem...

Re: 13 month old GSP - pointing on lead, what to do?

I'm only using the e-collar for behaviour correction and am following Pat Nolan's ecollar training information. When she doesn't come she gets a nick but that's only after giving her the opportunity to come after me saying it twice to her. 90% of the time she comes on the first come. I am working on...

13 month old GSP - pointing on lead, what to do?

Hi - I have a 13-month old GSP and though I wasn't a hunter prior to owning her, I am educating myself and am working with her so we can hunt. The question I have is we get in to situations where I have her on a 15 foot lead and she holds point on Robins, I say whoa and she stays on point, but at th...
