Re: Brittany goes limp when given "kennel" command
I laughed out loud because our pooch occasionally does the same thing. It always makes me grin because the look he gives me is just adorable. So I give him a vigorous belly rub and a snap of the fingers. He usually gets up and goes in after that. I'm sure every dog is different, but a little extra a...

Re: shivering?
I was out working in the yard yesterday and it was cold and breezy. Lots of shivering from our dog. The wife kept taking him in because she felt sorry for him, but would bring him out a few minutes later because he wanted out so bad. After going in/out 3-4 times, he got to shiver outside with me... ...

Re: Getting the dog to "play"
Vet guess was about a year old. He isn't quite as well behaved around other dogs as I would have hoped, but I figure that comes from being at the shelter. He is excited to see the other dog, but then starts to growl and get aggressive if we get closer. So right now if we see another dog, we avoid th...

Re: Getting the dog to "play"
Thanks for all the advice and things to think about. At least no one said it would be bad or detrimental to encourage him to do normal doggy things. I am a very patient person and am in it for the long haul. I just didn't want to train a behavior that would be detrimental in the long run. He is a gs...

Getting the dog to "play"
So, we rescued a GSP mix from a shelter, and I know there is a period of adjustment while the dog learns the new home and the family. This is my first GSP so I'm reading as much as I can off the internet regarding temperament but I want to know if we're doing something wrong (or more importantly I d...

Re: Neutering question
Vet's best guess was "about a year". I appreciate the second opinion, that helps me feel a little better about taking him in.

Neutering question
Since we adopted a dog from the shelter, state law requires neutering. He looks neutered to me. The vet said his testicles haven't descended. What age does that happen? I'd hate to neuter him twice...

Re: How to train puppy not to pee in crate
His crate may be too big. I read on here if they have too much space they will do that, so we got a crate with an adjustable panel that we can move as he grows.

New from Northwest Iowa
We recently rescued a dog for a family pet, but may have inadvertently found myself a hunting partner. He appears to be a GSP mix, around 1 year old. He's been in the shelter since July. He is very friendly, seems smart and learns very quickly. We have broken him of his bad kennel habits (jumping, b...
