Re: 2nd Hunting Dog to run with GSP

Thanks for all the comments. I have decided to wait another season and see what happens. I still want another hunting dog, but who knows I may end up with 2 GSP's in a couple of years.

Thanks again.

Re: 2nd Hunting Dog to run with GSP

Sorry for late reply I was off to Disney with my Family. Too answer I few questions. I hunt with multiple shooters. Mainly to due to the shooters having access to hunting land and I have proven my GSP can find the birds. I usually hunt with 3-5 hunters. I train as much has I hunt. In fact for the fi...

2nd Hunting Dog to run with GSP

OK .... You guys are are right thanks for keeping me in line. I will keep training the GSP on hunting dead and retrieving. OK. But I have fallen deeply for upland hunting and love to watch the dogs work. Is it really a bad idea to add another dog? How about a Brittany? I was really wanting more advi...

Re: 2nd Hunting Dog to run with GSP

Jim....Good post. I don't have the dog steady. As of now the dog bolts as soon a the birds fly. No possible way for the dog to actually see many of the downed birds.

Thanks,
Marshall

Re: 2nd Hunting Dog to run with GSP

Yes....I have a professional doing the FF and he started today. I also want to be clear.....I am not saying that the GSP can not do the work. I just don't think she wants to do it....which FF should help with a pure retrieve. Hunting dead is still a concern. I can call her back with a here command a...

Re: 2nd Hunting Dog to run with GSP

Agreed on the GSP bloodline and believe me my GSP will retrieve a bumper all day long and is breed NAVDHA. Maybe Its me!! I hunt wild birds! They don't cooperate. My GSP will retrieve if I have a one bird up one bird down situation, but that almost never happens. Most of the time a covey rises and a...

2nd Hunting Dog to run with GSP

I have a 18 Month old GSP that had an awesome hunting season. She points and finds birds like crazy, but is not so great at hunting dead and retrieving. She will do it, but doesn't love it. She likes finding birds. Anyway....I was considering buying a running mate for the GSP. I want a dog that love...

Re: Relocating on Wild Birds

DGFlavor....

You dog scented the birds way out. Your pup has a good nose and will learn. That's about where I started. The first few time out on wild birds was terrible. MY pup busted so many covey of quail. All I can say is keep putting your dog on birds.

Re: Relocating on Wild Birds

Thanks for the complement, but I really didn't teach her this. The birds did and/or she was born with it. Very good to know about the trial as well. I haven't ran any, but was considering trying one out this spring. What trial competition would you recommend for a hunter and for fun?

Relocating on Wild Birds

Check this video out below of my 16 month old GSP. Notice how my pup relocates on the wild quail that are running. I am sure this would not be good in a trial, but she does pin the birds in and we get the birds. I am wondering what you guys would recommend as far as training going forward? Thoughts?...

Re: GSP's Belly Scratched and Chaffed

I used the vest seen here in the avatar. It worked great for the belly area, but rubbed her in the chest from running.

Fix one thing break another.

Re: GSP's Belly Scratched and Chaffed

Very Cool!! I will give the skid plates a go. My GSP is really gets after it and would run through anything to find a covey.

Thanks again!!

GSP's Belly Scratched and Chaffed

MY GSP and I are hunting thick cover in Texas. She got her belly messed up pretty good. 2 questions. 1. Can someone recommend a belly guard for hot Texas weather? I don't think something thick and hot would work down here. 2. What can I do for the area Today to help heal the belly? Thanks, Marshall

Hunting improvement on my 1 year old GSP.

Ok...this my pups first hunting season and she is doing great she points and hustle all day. 2 areas I see where we can improve our hunting experience. Situation 1 Pup points covey of quail. Gunners move it to shoot. Birds get up…shots are fired, but no birds are downed . Dog chases a single bird as...

Re: Help with my first GSP

Went out last night, but couldn't find the birds. I hope they are still around!!! She has learned not to chase deer and rabbits. I will keep trying. Wild birds are so much fun. Man...Just nothing like the sound of a covey busting! I have a few other places to try. The season here in Texas opens Oct....

Re: Help with my first GSP

I really think she is pointing birds and not the launcher. I have planted birds without the launcher and she points them. She is also pointing far enough way that she could not see launcher. I have not tried and empty launcher though. My gut tells me she just doesn't know how close she can get to wi...

Help with my first GSP

I have a 10 Month old GSP. She is pointing pigeons and quail in a laucher well. I take here out to work some wild quail and she is tripping all over them. The birds are flushing before she has a chance to lock up. She is doing this on both large covey and sigles after the flush. I think she will eve...

Pointer Training Group Austin, Tx

I am looking for a group to join to help train my 10 month old GSP. I have been working at it alone, but it sure would help to have some buddies. Let me know if anyone around the Austin, TX area has a training group or is interest in starting one up.

Thanks
Marshall
