Would you recommend
Good afternoon everyone. I have been contemplating getting an e collar for my Brittany. Now I am a first time trainer and have no experience using one and quite frankly I am very apprehensive and afraid I may mess up more than be productive with it. Would you recommend a first timer using an e-collar?
Re: pointing
I went bird hunting with a buddy and came home with a few when she was like 8 weeks old.
Re: pointing
i found out I can have a pigeon coop but wont that interfere and mess things up if I have to have the coop in the same yard as the dog?
Re: pointing
Just for reference, my lot is about 70 feet by 100 feet and my neighbors called the town on me when I left privacy fencing out over night to dry on the side of my house.
Re: pointing
Thank you for the responses thus far. I have a bird launcher on order and just bought all the supplies to build a pigeon trap this past weekend so that'll be a project to build this week. I doubt my neighbors would appreciate me keeping pigeons in a pen but I live relatively close enough to areas th...

I have a Brittany pup that is 16 weeks old on Wed. She is my first bird dog so this is my first go at training. When she was younger I was doing the wing on a stick thing and she kind of pointed but it was for maybe a second then went to grab the wing. I read that this can be detrimental to her deve...

Re: update on breeding plus a question
I spoke to a vet today and he said it would be fine but to wait one more week so that puts her at 7.5 weeks. He said he doesn't advise past 8 weeks since they begin to develop bad habits.
Thank you everyone for your advice.

Re: update on breeding plus a question
So one week from today I get to go pick her up. Her name is going to be Specter. I found it appropriate with her moms name being Ghost. My co-workers have been telling me I am picking her up too early. I will be picking her up at 6 weeks and 3 days old. Should I tell the breeder I want to wait longe...

Re: update on breeding plus a question
Well I got word last night that Ghost had her pups at 3am on 8/27/14. The litter was six pups with five males and one female. The breeder reserved the right to keep a female but he felt it was not necessary to act on that right since I have been waiting. He did verify I wanted a female and that he w...

Re: update on breeding plus a question
I live in MI and I work 45 mins from home. Luckily enough I have a retired neighbor I trust to possibly help me out. Plus my gf only works 10 mins from my house. I want to put in a dog door from the garage out into a kennel. One of those home projects that are on the list. Hopefully the weather hold...

Re: update on breeding plus a question
Well small update: The female is now at the males kennel in Ohio. They successfully bred last thurs and she will stay there until she is no longer receptive. So if all goes as planned I am looking at a pup coming home right around 10/17/14.

Re: update on breeding plus a question
That may be an option, Karen. Would it be out of line for me to offer to pay for such testing? I do not want to step on any toes and imply a "don't worry I will take care of it" kind of thing. I know the "responsible" breeders will say that the breeder should absorb this cost but this breeder has re...

Re: update on breeding plus a question
no such luck with her being pregnant. So now unfortunately I have to wait until about the end of Sept for a pup to come home. I have decided to stick with the same breeder since all other litters are spoken for or the others will not be ready to come home until the same time frame. Giving up a lot o...

nothing yet. I should know more by Wed. See to me I thought the red bottom plus looking a little chubby could be a good indicator. If not I will be waiting until Sept.

No, I do not own any dog. The breeder I am going to is the owner of the bitch. This would be my first hunting dog. The vet he uses is just going into private practice so she is getting set up and does not have an open office yet and the machines moved. I can appreciate someone that will only trust o...

Re: update on breeding plus a question
thank you all for your input. I went to visit the breeder yesterday and talk in person rather than e-mails back and forth. So to me she looks pregnant with hanging nipples, kind of pudgy, and very pink/red bottom, then again he says she always semi like that and shes kind of tricky. I do not know, I...

Re: update on breeding plus a question
Spoke to the breeder yesterday. Stated that he cant tell yet and that she is due May 18th but can go as late at May 21. He told me even if she has any there may only be a few so I would assume by "few" max is three pups. Another dilemma is that he is still reserving the right to keep one female. I h...

Re: update on breeding plus a question
When I spoke with the breeder he said 'just because I can't feel anything, it doesn't mean anything, I have always had a hard time feeling the puppies with her.' He also stated he felt optimistic about it, also that maybe the puppies are just a little high up, whatever that means. Shall see since pr...

update on breeding plus a question
Ok so if anyone remembers my previous posts, I have been waiting on a Brittany pup. Well the breeder has two females. The first went into heat in Jan and the female needed to be brought to Minnesota to be bred but that did not happen due to the obvious bad weather we have had in the North. So the ot...

I would say don't rehome the dog. Maybe you live somewhere where you have a trusted neighbor or maybe one if your buddies wives is a housewife of gf. You get the idea. Most people here know you have to provide for the dog. When is your 2nd pup due to come home? Same breed?

Re: how does this whole selection system work
I am not understanding the moral (or lack thereof) to your story. I mean no offense to this but are you saying "don't worry about the selection because breeders can be dishonest"? are you saying that breeders can be unethical? not sure. I ride my bike all over the place so I am sure while the pups a...

ok in case anyone was curious what the breeder told me. "Puppy selection: I reserve the right to make the first choice of a puppy from the litter if I wish to. Then you will have the second choice. I may not desire to keep a puppy then you can choose from all of the puppies. You can come and make a ...

Re: Dog respecting your home
I never understood why people say you shouldnt have a dog unless you can be home every few hours to let them out. Our society is dependent on people working. You have to work to be able to afford a dog am I right? hunting dogs are not cheap. They require a lot of dough invested in them to make them ...

Peter (and anyone else that may know). How do you go about finding a vet that is experienced in the sporting dog breeds? Good morning. I need some advice. So recently I have decided to get a dog and what better dog than a hunting dog. I have narrowed my search down to a brittany. I have hunted with them but never owned one. I know about their energy level and I have a fenced yard and there is enough land and parks nea...
