Re: Bluetick/Wirehair Pointer Mix

The trainer I use had an Airedale in his kennel that he trained to point, retrieve, and honor another dog. Give your dog a chance with knowledgable training techniques. Anything is possible. 4 months is too early to determine much.

Re: GSP not as advertised

Before I would put the dog down, I would try to place it in an environment where it could be given ample time to correct some behavior issues. A different approach by a different trainer could produce good results. I have given dogs an extended opportunity and seen them come around. It took longer t...

Re: My condolences to any Lions fans!

Totally ludicrous to blame the outcome on a blown call. How about the 4th and 1 that ended up a touchdown against the NFLs best rushing defense? Did the lions exexcute every play to perfection? No dropped passes? No incorrect routes? No penalties that extended a possesion? Of course not, just a blow...

Re: Bedding for outside dogs

I live at 7000 ft elevation with some pretty cold temps in winter. I use wood shavings that I buy in a bundle from my feed store. I pile it in the dog house deep enough that my GSP can burrow down in it and they seem to do well. Sometimes they occupy the same dog house which adds to the warmth.

Re: Man Awarded $145,000 in the Shooting of His Dog

Don't think you can compare hunting dogs to livestock. I don't know anyone who lets their livestock sleep in the house with them! Yes, a dog may be considered property, but the emotional attachment is far greater than most other property. Punitive damages are just that...punishment...for inflicting ...

Re: Training collars

What a fire a little spark can kindle! I have the advantage of remembering what it was like trying to break hounds from running deer without a training/e-/shock collar. I tried all of the methods known to man with a black&tan coon hound. Nothing worked. I ended up having to keep him on a leash until...

Wild birds vs pen raised

I never hunted pen raised birds until a few months ago. The birds i've been using stay exactly where they are planted. Does this hinder a dogs ability to trail birds? Seems like it might, but again, this is my first time using pen raised birds. I don't have enough wild birds here to do any good, so ...

Re: Training collars

birddogger, no harm no foul. when it comes to trash breaking hounds, the term "shock collar" is correct. Fortunately I haven't had to use one in a long time for that purpose. Certainly don't expect to have to use a training collar on my GSP puppy. She seems to have the kind of temperament that will ...

Politicians are not about solutions...they are about votes and power. The only thing that looks like a solution in their eyes is the thing that perpetuates political power. Doesn't matter which side of the aisle they set on.

Re: Training collars

At this point its really doesn't matter how the trainer handled the 6 yr old dog. I'm happy with his performance and have a blast hunting with him. Part of my motive in asking for insights into his tendencies is the fact that I am going to train my own pup now. I am going to use the book recommended...

Training collars

Bought a GSP that was trained by a pro. Does everything just right and I love the dog. I do have one question. Without a shock collar on, he absolutely will not respond to any commands. With a shock collar on, he is a perfectly behaved dog and I very rarely, if ever, have to use the collar. I know t...

I will mention something that probably played a part in the tendencies of these birds. The area I was in had very sparse ground cover. Mostly scattered greasewood and creosote bushes with little to no grass or other cover. I suppose they felt pretty exposed and therefore would'nt hold for the dog. I...

Hunted in southwest New Mexico saturday. The first covey of blue quail we got into, was running 100-150 yards out in front of the dog...dog never got close enough to have a chance at pointing. Re: Whats your favorite dog breed? And why?

I've run bear and lion hounds, rabbits with beagles, squirrels with rat terriers, and trained guard dogs and personal protection dogs. My all time favorite is a well trained GSP pointing a wild bird! The nose and the smarts that it takes to be successful hunting birds always amazes me. A good bird d...

I've had a coyote try to decoy one of my hounds while I was roading them. My GSP rides in the back seat of my 4-door pickup...few minutes into the trip he lays down and usually stays there until time to get out. My Airedale does the same thing, although she will get in the front seat if I let her. I live in a small rural community...guess I take a more casual approach to ...

We had a major fire 2 years ago in my area. I was evacuated for 3 days. 300 + structures burned...many of them were homes. Millions of dollars worth of timber lost.
