Re: Wisconsin Roll Call

Originally from Minneapolis suburbs but have lived in Hudson WI for 12 years. Have a 3-1/2 yr old GSP and have had a blast hunting pheasants even when there aren't any rooster around we still enjoy a beautiful point on Hens. I don't know enough about grouse hunting and I think I just need to give it...

Re: Newbie to gun dogs and I have some questions

Dear Newbie, I'm sorry to see nobody else has responded to your question. You have quite a list there. I really don't know much about all of the other breeds but I have a German Shorthair Pointer. He is 3-1/2 years old and he is the best dog I have ever had. He is beautiful and what an athlete! He l...

Re: Grouse

My dad and I went grouse hunting on Saturday and had a great day. Hunted for 4 hours and flushed 14 grouse. We had a 7 bird flush, and a 3 bird flush. The rest were singles. Ended the day with 3 grouse. A great way to end the season. Ruffbritt4, Everything after your first sentence is a plus. You a...

Sounds like you had a fun trip. It is also nice to have a friend who knows his way around Iowa! (good job protecting his hunting grounds by the way) I guess I just haven't picked the right friends over the years. It is a disappointment the season is over as of yesterday here in Wisconsin, I sh...

Hello everyone I'm Greg Jacobs Male From eastern washington 57 the last time I did the math. Been hunting since I got my first trusty daisy. I was sure part of those birds were mine which dad always confirmed. The kids hit the sports years and I found myself chasing the games more than my shorthair...

Re: Warning to hunters in the cattails

I wish I would have had friends or relatives to get me hooked 40 years ago! This ! Good that you saved it for now! Well, I still have the strength to keep going out there. Maybe I have another 20 years out there in the fields. :) I like your quote, especially the added bonus of the wife, house and ...

Re: Warning to hunters in the cattails

It is hard to believe we can find thin ice at this time of year when they are driving trucks out on the ice to fish! But these sloughs must have springs working the ice. Another good reason to hunt with a partner but I go when I can without much heads up time for someone else to get ready. Thank you...

Re: Pup making weird noises in his crate

that's right they are dogs, NOT GOLDFISH, I am shocked at the number of people that think keeping a young high energy breed in a small box most of the day is somehow Ok because its convenient OP this isn't directed at you but you do need to build that kennel ASAP So I have a 8 week old puppy in Dec...

Re: Warning to hunters in the cattails

It is a lot of fun hunting the reeds! (When not breaking through)(By the way, I didn't tell my wife. I washed the clothes, the dog and I both showered before she was home-Chip kept it a secret also). The snow sucked the moisture off him pretty well and I wasn't too wet, (it was about 31 degrees- so ...

Warning to hunters in the cattails

In Wisconsin, we hunted a frozen lake (ice @12" thick) surrounded by 20-40 yards of cattails and reeds which I hunted 3 days earlier. Skirting around to the North side of the lake we encountered a 6-8 ' wide 3' deep creek still open and running fast. I back tracked 50 yards and took a deer path thro...

Re: PP hair loss hunting

I notice it most often after hunting through the swamp reeds and the rougher grasses around the swamps. My GSP loses a lot of hair in his pits and his nose, I don't notice around the eyes though. This probably sounds stupid but what is a P.P.? I've seen it on the forum before but don't know what bre...

Re: Road salt and dogs?

I don't think you are going to need to worry about your dog eating the road salt. My GSP has never stopped during a walk for a sample taste of the road salt and he is 3. If your dog does, he will get real thirsty and just eat a lot of snow before going home. I wouldn't worry. I live in Wisconsin and...

Re: shivering?

My pointer used to shiver a lot. I did some investigation. One of the possible causes can be too low body fat content. It turned out much of the shivering in my pointer was from this. Her shivers would occur constantly. Even when bedded in warmth. We picked up her weight/fat a bit and she lost most...

Sounds great! And you didn't use anything else in addition to that in the entire period? My brother uses a collar and Frontline for extra protection. I feel like Advantix does a better job but I will give the Seresto collar a try this year.(thanks for the web site) Are you in an area with a lot of d...

Re: Cold weather hunting questions

I use wide mouth water bottles (@3'dia mouth)(4-1/2" dia bottle) and then I have a handy collapsable roll up type dish I can crumple up and shove in my vest pocket. It works great! and I am able to conserve water he didn't drink back into the bottle easily. I generally know he needs water when his p...

Ben, It took me two applications before I figured that out last year also. Lucky my wife wants to refurnish the living room anyway (or not). I have just watched him closely for the next 2 days after application ever since. "Monster Dad"- that is interesting that you found a collar that works better ...

Now that was a great day! Sounds like you're doing a great job with Si. I know what your saying for birds in Wisconsin. I live in Hudson, WI near the cities. But we have quite a few public lands around here where I can find 1 or 2 in a couple hours of hunting. Some days- nothing. Some days Chip (GSP...

Re: Too Noisy for hunting

Sounds to me like you're making noise because you're trying to keep your pointing dog in flushing dog range to satisfy your slow friends. I bet that gets very frustrating. I'd keep quiet and let your dog range ahead as far as he wants. He's bred to find birds and hold them for you, not work across ...

Re: Too Noisy for hunting

No, the trainer just said I might want to work on his retrieving a bit more. He hunted the dogs 3 at a time while he was on horseback. I don't know if he was having (or expecting) them retrieve or not. I have not contacted him again. I think that was bad investment. The trainer let them go out to 60...

Re: Too Noisy for hunting

Good advice, thanks "rkappes": As far as range as soon as the dog is at the range that is too far for you immediately call him back or give your work closer command along with the vibrate on your collar, like stated above. If the dog is birdy, I'd simply stop the group and have whoever is closest to...

Too Noisy for hunting

My hunting buddies say I am too noisy in the field with all of the whistles and commands (come around, over, in) while Pheasant hunting. Chip (3 years old) did great at that but is used to hunting alone with me most of the time, so I needed to have him extend his runs each way (left and right). But ...
