what happens to gun shy pointers?
Hi all, I have posted recently about looking for a pointing dog as first a family pet, second a pointer for bowhunting birds (no gun shooting). Would I be a good candidate for a pointer that is excellent in all regards but gun shy? what happens to those dogs? How old would the dog be before it decla...

exercise level of gsp as compared to labs
Hi all, I know all dogs and are different, etc, but can anyone comment in broad strokes on the exercise needs/hyperness of GSPs vs. Labs. I have a fair amount of lab experience, and am quite comfortable with their needs for our family schedule, etc. Mind you, these have all been family only dogs, not...

Re: dog for upland bowhunting
Agreed, pointing on upland birds is a must for bowhunting! One uses Flu Flu arrows with huge feathers to prevent long flight, and easy recovery. Dogs can help in finding arrows too. As for points, snaro tips (big loops of wire) or equivalent give a better chance of actually hitting anything, but cer...

Re: dog for upland bowhunting
perhaps I should add being able to find/retrieve arrows too, more likely than hitting many birds!

dog for upland bowhunting
Hi all, I currently do not hunt nor own a dog, however me and my children are looking to get into both. I would like to tell you what kinds of hunting we would be ideally doing, and you suggest what is actually possible/desirable and possible breed or breeder suggestions. We currently have little in...

Re: Hello! and specific dog breed questions...
thank you for the good advice. I quite agree, there is much variation within a given litter, and obv training and people taught habits are a major factor. however a great many of the various breeding sites make very consistent comments about "indoor excitability" or "hyperness" and describe others a...

Hello! and specific dog breed questions...
Greetings all! I currently do not own any type of dog, nor do I hunt. But I would like to change both. Upland bird hunting and small game is a goal for me, but the dog is a must. It will be a family pet first and potential hunter (to kill, will take early with camera) later. I kind of have my mind s...
