If you go out to John Martin it may be worth trying around Queens (Neenoshe) Reservoir also. Fifteen years ago there were some bobs there, then again, fifteen years ago there were some bobs in a lot of places.

Re: Need help selecting first gun dog
I like the idea of a started dog as well. How old is a started dog typically and would you be able to start hunting with the dog that year? I got my first pointer puppy as a teenager. I didn't have a clue how to train a dog (still don't  ) or the resources to do so. The dog never did make and ...

My brother and I typically load up the dogs and go to the Oklahoma panhandle around New Years for a 4-5 quail hunt. We have done well enough in years past to always return, but this year the numbers are so low we are wanting to look elsewhere. We will be leaving from Bartlesville, Oklahoma and are w...

Ptarmigan hunt in Alaska. I think it was December 27th. Truck thermometer said -34° F and the wind was blowing on the ridges. Dog had no problems. We did have a vest on her durring the hunt though, just took it off for the pictures. That was a fun hunt! Here's another picture from that same day. ht...

I do not trial, therefore my stance on style is any way my dog points! I understand some people must have 12oclock tail, but I simply love a solid intense point no matter where the dogs tail is!! That imo, and understand everyone does not agree! Can't agree more. I once found my dog sitting on a sn...

Just to clear a couple things up... The breeder has spoken to my vet. We live several states apart so a second opinion by a vet of his choice isn't really an option. I am in no way trying to harm the breeder’s reputation. I am keeping the pup and she will not be euthanized. After spay she should liv...

I'm going to be purposely vague about my dog and breeder here so please no questions about specifics. The details of...

My pointer has brought such pleasure into my life that there is no expense I would not pay to keep her going (I have already invested thousands in vet bills, including cancer surgery). Spoil sport. When looking at schools for my graduate degree I can honestly admit that hunting opportunities nearby are a big factor. It's not that I don't take my school seriously, it's just that if I'm going to dedicate that kind of effort and money I want to enjoy my free time.

A few years ago I wanted a beeper but could not afford one. My solution was a $5 bell. I always knew where the dog was until she went on point, but even then I knew about where she was because I had heard her a few seconds earlier. No batteries, no expense, no worries.

Well Brian, considering your dislike for snow I will concentrate in the south. turkey rise vs. quail decline
I have heard and read many things about the effect of turkey on quail numbers. Some say that turkey will eat quail chicks and others say they have no effect. I know that in my area the turkey numbers never were that good until about ten or fifteen, which is about the time the quail had a drastic dec...
