I got a shorthair as my first gun dog 9 years ago and he was in the house with me until the day he passed. I lived in 4 different houses in 8 years, including a condo without a yard and he did great. They do need exercise though so don't expect a bulldog that sleeps all day and night. He was the bes...

Re: New from PA
Nothing is impossible but some things are more difficult than others. If you are willing to put the time in you may be able to take your dog hunting at a level you are satisfied with but you may not. You would likely have better luck with a pup that had the right genetics. If it was me I'd keep my h...

Re: First Hunt...
Thanks Ray and Don. My first dog was a GSP that hunted close his entire life and never gave me concern. I bought my setter because I wanted a little extra speed and range but in application it has been a challenge getting accustomed. Connecticut opens up this Saturday so I'm certain I'll have him on...

Had the family in Vermont over this past weekend and brought the young setter with me. I took him on 2 morning hunts while there but pushed only one grouse the entire time. Not what I had hoped for his first times off the training fields but I'm sure we both learned a few lessons along the way. My p...

Re: From Training to Actual Hunting
Thanks for the advice Ray and I appreciate the thorough and we'll crafted response. That's why I'm on this forum. I don't have a lot of time to spend with local guys so it's good to be able to consult with the folks like you and others on the forum. So far I am pleased with the dogs performance and ...

Thanks all. I appreciate the feedback. While I don't intend to trial I do want this dog to be a lot better trained than my last.

From Training to Actual Hunting
The start of my official hunting season will begin on 10/12 with a trip to Vermont and then the CT seasons open up the following weekend. With the hunting season so close I could use some recommendations on taking the dog from the training field to his first days in the hunting field. Here is a litt...

Southern VT
Might be heading to Southern VT in mid October and was thinking about taking the pup and doing some grouse/woodcock hunting. I have absolutely no knowledge of the area and would love a starting point. Anyone willing to PM some advice on where to look? I'll be about 15 minutes north of Brattleboro so...

Hunt Day Nutrition
With the season right around the corner for most of us I am curious how everyone else feeds their dogs on the day of a hunt. My first dog was a not so impressive GSP that I just fed normally on the day of a hunt. He would be fed in the early morning, long before heading to the field and then again a...

I've only had him since December and he had a very thin coat at that point too. Here is the best photo I can get.

Thin Coat 13 month Setter
So my setter has always had a thin coat and even at 13 months old it has not thickened up much at all. Have any of you folks had setters like this? Does it get thicker over time? I'm actually more concerned about him getting tore up in the field and the woods than I was my old shorthair. Is it somet...

Training Progressing Nicely
So after a bunch of months of very gradual training my young setter seems to have caught on. He's no longer bumping birds, stops on first scent and is hunting with me very well. I started with the Hickox Program but realized that the dog didn't respond well to pressure so I moved over to the PS/PF m...

Welcome to the site. Lots of good information on here and multiple view points on just about every subject. Good luck with the new pup. P.S. If your new to the training aspect I suggest reading the hall of fame post on "if you could go back". Excellent information for less experienced folks like mys...

Lost Homers?
I built the LCS pigeon loft about a month ago now and have had 6 young homers in there since. This evening I left the door open to give them an opportunity to fly out and start getting accustomed to the area. I opened the door around 5 pm and by dark I had no birds back in the loft. There were 4 bir...

Re: wife wants to help train birddog- issues?
oldtowneben - just wanted to chime in with my experiences on the subject. My wife does not train my dogs. Never has...never will. She does not wish to and I am fine with that. She has carved out her own niche for herself with the animals. Let'sjust say her nickname is "THE SPOILER". She is the one ...

What collars do your dog's wear?
I'm home from work watching the baby today so I figured I get a thread going. What collar (style, width, color etc) do your dog's wear when home and when hunting. My boys have always worn a 1" O ring collar in orange at all times. I need to order a couple of new collars so what's everyone else doing?

Re: First homers
When you say fly you mean just letting them out of the loft not actually taking them down the road and releasing them correct? It sounds like Don recommends opening the loft and letting them out on tgeir own early on in the process. How early?

First homers
So I'll be picking up the my first homers tomorrow night and will be putting them into the newly built loft. The birds are young and I'm brand new to this so I could use some advice on how to be successful. The loft is sized for 1 bird per 2 Sq ft and the birds are only 5 weeks old. My hope is to be...

Re: Aviary or not...
I'm under the assumption tge aviary is the small wire cage hanging off the front or side if the loft. Perhaps that's the wrong terminology. What is the point of the cage on the outside? I've seen feeders in there so is this just a separate space for feeding and sun?

Aviary or not...
What is the general consensus on whether or not I should put an aviary on the front of the new pigeon loft? I twisted my best friends arm and he is allowing me to put the loft in his yard as I cannot have one per local regulations. I'm going to use the LCS plans but was curious what the point of the...

Re: Pigeons and the garage
I have one game farm within 45 minutes drive where I can get Chuckar for $9.50 and our small animal auctions are during the week and kick off before I can get out of work. I certainly find birds but it's not without a lot of effort and it's never from the same source. With a 14 month old baby, a 9 m...

Pigeons and the garage
So I'm one of the lucky few who live in the burbs and technically cannot have a pigeon loft in the yard. I'm in the begging to middle stages of training my 10 month old setter and I am tired of constantly chasing down new birds (not to mention the cost and the inclination to constantly tether the bi...
