Let's cut him some slack, he was taking his pops hunting. I'm sure he is law abiding. Talk about jumping to conclusions! I hope your dad has many more hunts in the future. We can always raise some more birds but not fathers, just sayin

Good area to hunt pheasant in Kansas?

Instead of beating you up for asking this question I'll add some useful information. If you wait until the upland bird forecast comes out that will be a starting place. Combine that with rainfall maps and it will get you in the areas. The public areas in KS get beat up pretty bad. Some of them will...

Good area to hunt pheasant in Kansas?

Would counties be sufficient or would you prefer gps coordinates? I recommend you get out there and scout/hunt like the rest of us instead of asking for locations on a public forum... Most of us put in a lot of man and dog hours finding the birds. I can't help but laugh at this request... Sorry. I'...

I am interested in getting some feedback on public hunting areas that hold good bird numbers in Kansas? If anyone has hunted there and can enlighten me I would be grateful. Thx

+1 fun dog. I've had labs and GSP over the last 25 years. I love my Bella she is 3 years old and in the zone. Hunts her hiney off!

Welcome to the club CT, I hate to hear about your GSP. I've have a 3 year old now and one about 25 years ago. Greatest breed in the world IMO. So I'm guessing that your grouse hunt with the English? I've heard the bird numbers are good there? I live in KY but am a native to PA.

What type of Gun/What barrel lenght do you use

I hunt grouse in Kentucky. Most of the habitat is in very deep thickets so I'm shooting a Russian mp-18 28 inch single barrel synthetic stock. Very light and durable, not worried about dropping it or slamming it against down tree limbs to get a good shot lol. I like the challenge with my fixed modif...

Mine is a 3 year old female, she hunts about three days a week ( grouse season is open). She runs hard for four or five hours and I still have to coax her to get in the vehicle. Crazy dog, when she is not hunting I try to take her to the park and turn her loose, working hand signals and whistle. At ...

I'm back with big question

With a flusher they don't have time to run, they need to get up in the air. This is the primary reason I decided against a pointing breed. Where I hunt, its so thick and the birds are spooky. A pointing dog would be the same as me walking on my own - it would point and the bird would take off runni...

Four questions for training your first dog

I agree, I have a three year old and train everyday for atleast thirty minutes. In the summer I buy some quail and plant them on a public land where they hold field trials. It helps the pup learn bird behavior. They are very bright pups and learn by trial on each encounter. Don't get impatient. It w...

You probably shouldn't own a pointer if you want it to hunt at 30 yards, that's flusher range. You have to learn to let the dog roll and trust it. If he's staying within 100 yards, he's in perfect grouse range. Is this for real - 100 yards for grouse? Are you talking ruffed grouse? Here in northwes...

I took my 3 year old GSP out to her on some grouse. First clear cut she jumped a bunny, no birds. Second clearcut about a mile away. Moved two birds and shot at a 3rd. Watched him land on the the right side of a creek about 60 yards away. Followed and Bella locked up tight on the deadfall. Couldn't ...

I'm hunting in Jackson County in the Danial Boone and Mill Creek WMA. Birds are scarce to say the least. The woods I'm hunting are clearcut and about 10-15 years old. I work my GSP in thickets and find more rabbits than birds. I wish there would be more selective logging to be honest. I heard the hu...
