Re: Where does your dog ride?
I have tried about everything, from the back seat to expensive kennels. By far my favorite is my intermediate Gunner Kennel under a cap on my truck. No wet dogs in the truck. They are securely tied down and cant slide in the bed. Dogs are safe and the inside of my truck is clean, everyone is happy.

Scout,
The real question is where in Holly Shelter? It is so big I haven't wanted to drive an hour to try and pick through that much ground. I'm not asking for a 10 digit grid to your coveys, but a general area would be good.

I just went through this with 2 males. They fought my older dog put the younger ones head in his mouth and took a good chunk out of him and it was over. A couple years later it was obvious that the older one ceded control over and there was never another dominance problem.

In my experience if they want to get out they will get out.I had one bend chain link to get out. If I was to build Something now It would be a 6ft tall chain link fence set 3in into a 18' wide 6in deep concrete channel all the way around. That stops the diggers and limits the jumpers all at once.

There are not many places that you are going to find wild quail. You are even less likely to find a lodge that you hunt wild birds at, most lodges are pen raised birds at this point.
Re: Ammo
Pretty broad question. All of the major ammunition manufacturers make non toxic ammo. What kind of performance and shot weight are you looking for, I shott #6's tells us nothing.

My dogs are taught to kennel up from day 1. Everything is the "kennel", crate, outdoor kennel, the truck. They learn to tolerate it. That being said I have one that will not jump on to the tail gate of my truck, no matter what I do.

I haven't tried pigeons, but quail have worked well for me. I will buy a few birds for training, and then go to a preserve with a young dog early in the season. After that my dogs learn through experience with wild birds. That has worked for me, but I know many people here swear by pigeons.

To preserve a friendship I would work something out with your friend, but IMHO it is his responsibility. He should know when his female is coming into season and keep her separated from an intact male. I would not try to keep any of the dogs from that litter.

Good luck breaking some of the brush out West or in NC to get to it. If he is going to point a dead bird, why wouldn't you teach him to pick it up and bring it back? That logic is failing me. Is the dog not a tool to use in the field to make your life easier?

This whole argument is skewed. Most well bred dogs will hunt right out the gate. Much of the desired characteristics are there at birth. We feel the need to make sure the dog points picture perfectly, or is Steady to Wing and Shot. We have increased our expectations of what a hunting dog SHOULD look...

I hunt quail with English Pointers and therefore the need for an auto loader is a requirement. I never use treats and will not start. It is a slippery slope in my mind. I use my attention as the reward. If they do right they get my attention or they get released to go back and hunt. If not they are ignored until I receive the desired response. It works for me, I will stick with it.

Take a long leash with the prong collar, and slowly start keeping less tension on it. Eventually, the dog will get the message. Then remove the pronged collar and use the same technique. Eventually you will get to point where the dog will heel without any tension on the leash. Then go to trying it w...
