Re: Pedigree Help

The AKC also has specific hunt test titles for breeds that can participate in more than one kind of test. The 'U' is for retrievers that can run spaniel tests, and indicates their Upland ability. The titles are JHU, SHU and MHU. The second kind is an 'R' for spaniels and pointing breeds that can run...

Re: Woodcock Hunting in Oklahoma

Looks like nobody does. My understanding is that the eastern side of the state has some, particularly in the southeast corner.

Re: Pointer Primer

2015 Hall of Fame list should give you some idea: You'll have to google each one and read up to get the info you are looking for. That's a really good idea. I don't mind doing my own research at all, just figured some people might have some insight to offer. What ever the Dam produced  I prob...

Re: Pointer Primer

Looking at dogs on the ground is both good advice and on my agenda. I'd like to think I can talk on a dog forum as well; as you say, dog people like talking about their dogs :D

Re: Pointer Primer

I'm more interested in learning what's what in the pointer world than in getting specific recommendations for a pup. That said, I'm more interested in hunt tests and perhaps walking trials than in AA/horseback trials. Hunting is more important than testing to me, and I hunt public land in Kansas, mo...

Pointer Primer

A few years ago, when I started posting here, I mentioned that I was working two jobs to fix up my financial situation and re-enroll to finish a degree. I've traded the two jobs for one, much better, job since then and the re-enrollment is fast approaching. This turning point also means I can finall...

Hah! Well, good for you accumulating it all then. I wish more records were open.

Re: Fun with NSTRA data

Interesting numbers, nhachman! I didn't realize NSTRA data was so open. I think the fellow's name is Frank Thompson, that used to publish a book/magazine called the 'Pointer Breeder's Almanac'. He attempted to quantify probability of a specific sire producing a field trial winner. There are critical...

Re: Pheasant Fest 2016

I guess not! I'm surprised.

Anyways, it was a good time. Met Delmar Smith and watched his son, Rick, work his magic on a GSP pup. Saw an awful lot of good-looking dogs and talked to Mark Dinsmore (of L'etoile du Nord Kennels) a bit. The whole thing was a lot of fun!

Re: NSTRA Results: Dog Rating

What's the methodology of your system? Are you testing predictive power to confirm the validity of the ratings you're using? I'm all for adding a little more mathematical rigor to the hunting world (I'd settle for people saying how close 'close' is and how cold 'cold' is), but I'd like to understand...

Re: The Importance of Hunters

It takes more than a gun to make a soldier, and it takes more than lots of guns to make an army. I'm all for the 2nd amendment, and I hunt, but hunters aren't an army, and it's an odd comparison to make. The police force would be a closer, and more credible, threat to an invading army. And really, i...

Re: Decline of Field Trials

The worst economic situation since the depression is a myth. Nothing against you but it just shows how the news media and political sound bites influence what a lot of people believe. I've seen plenty of charts and analysis holding up my assertion, but I'd surely appreciate a pm with information to...

Re: Decline of Field Trials

I kinda figured you'd mistake empathy for sympathy. I'm not crying at all, merely explaining why I don't have the money, just as you apparently didn't at my age. Nonetheless, it sounds like your wife went through some hard times, not at that different from what happened to my brother a few years ago...

Re: Decline of Field Trials

So, Vonzeppelinkennels, when you were the age of the younger generation today, you didn't field trial either, but the reason that they don't is because they are so different from you? C'mon. My generation came of age in the worst economic situation since the Great Depression. There are three job see...

Re: A little about you...

Hey, I'm Brian, 28 years old, live in NE Kansas. My brother got an Irish Setter in the fall of 2012, and I've been having a blast talking dogs and helping him with training. It's really turned me on to hunting dogs and I'm planning on getting one of my own in a few years. We hunt mostly pheasant and...
