Wide Running Dog
I've got a 17 month old female GSP. From the time I got her at 8 weeks, I've worked on training her in some fashion everyday. At 16 weeks I put her through a 10 week AKC novice obedience course lead by a pro trainer, that was followed by another 10 week AKC open obedience course led by the same pro...

Beeper or GPS
I like to run a bell with a Garmin Astro. The Garmin works great for grouse hunting. It is a personal preference but that is how I like to run my dog. Same here, I started using a bell on my dogs towards the end of grouse season an I don't know why I didn't use one before it helps a lot if a dog is...

Tips to make dog stop whining...
I've only been exposed to about a dozen GSPs, but I haven't met one yet that didn't whine. Could this just be a trait common to the breed? Sounds like poor training to me. Bird dogs should not make noise. Have you ever been to a field trial??? Im at one right now an every single dog here has whinne...

Both my Gsp's chased tweety birds, my male chased them until he was 17 months an my female stop much sooner at 7 months. After putting my dogs on many quail an ruffed grouse they just grew out if it. But I agree with Sharon, show no interest an say nothing, an ignore the dog. Put as many pen raised ...

Our male is the same way, he's 20 months old and weighs 55. We feed him Purina pro plan sport 30:20 protein:fat which has helped him to gain and keep a few lbs on him over the past few months. Our experience is that Gsp's along with a lot of other breeds will reach their full maturity around 3-5 yea...

Very proud of my GSP first field trail
Kettle my 6 month old female German shorthaired finished 2nd in the Carolinas pointing dog association amateur walking puppy class. If no one has ran in any of there trails I highly recommend giving it a try, just a great group an super nice people. I think the main reason we didn't win was because ...

How much do you feed?
I had a dog one time that ate consistently, was well exercised, and overall a healthy dog. When she was young she was the nervous type and always a little insecure. That dog was always really skinny and never seemed to put on weight. As she aged to about seven or eight she became much calmer and sh...

You need pigeons bro. Planting an dizzying a pinned raised bird for a pup can create a bad habit like chasing, 9 outta 10 times a puppy will catch a pen raised quail. To many birds can be a bad thing, except wild birds cause they'll never catch a wild bird.Just passing along what I've learned from e...

How did the dove opener go for everyone? For me, not good. I'd scouted out a few public spots but due to work I couldn't make it out until about 7pm. So spots #1 and #2 were filled with vehicles already so I skipped those for #3 where only 1 vehicle was already in the parking lot. So no doves but i...

Re: Dove hunting with dogs
I've had my pointer customers call me after their first dove hunts with their new pups about how they didn't loose a downed bird. Personally I use my labradors for dove and ducks and save my pointers for Quail, pheasants and grouse. Steadying the dog is important for me but that's unimportant to ma...
