Re: new to gun dog training. need advice.
Agree.. You don't teach the sit command cause there's no use for it in your trials... Any dog sitting on point in any trial anywhere will get hooked So in countries where the vast majority train the ""sit"" would be more prevalent with dogs sitting on point??...if that's the case there would be a lo...

I got no problem with FACTS Any dog under hard pressure will crouch, loom lay on its belly regardless if it's trained to sit or not And what's this ""safe place"" you on about? Re: new to gun dog training. need advice.
I agree with Ray. Why teach something that has proven to be a problem for some when it is not necessary? I have never found a need to teach a dog to sit. My dogs stand as well as sit and as CJ pointed out the sit command is taught to make the dog stay down or just to stay put and that has never bee...

Hi Brad, I also have my dogs flush on command. No issue if the dog creeps, he'll learn from trial and error how far to push it, sure in the beginning he'll bump birds , might take one whole season to work it out .I myself never interfere (attempt to correct, train),in the field leave that job for the birds.

Re: Relocating or going in on the flush
Creeping and circling on birds that are not moving means the dog wants to see them fly. If you want your dog steady, take him back to the yard and the checkcord and pigeons and help him clean up his act. I don't much like the word "hammering" as it pertains to a young dog that hasn't been taught to...

The only training that needs to be done is the "stop to flush and fall" and the retrieve if the dog is not a natural retriever

Ray,Shags,
That was very informative thanks, do you train that "high and tight " for the "whoa"?
And would a "high and tight"dog be more desirable in the judges eyes over the so called "classic style" with all else been equal in field trials?

Very easy solution...instead of sit, teach wait (stand still). There isn't anything you can do with the dog sitting that you can't do with the dog on wait (he's standing still). Some folks think wait - or whatever you choose to say that will mean stand still - is a waste and use whoa instead, but i...
