Re: AKC JH Test question
So, just so I'm clear. The dog goes on point, I can then say Whoa so I can get within gun range? There is no reason to whoa a junior dog. The dog does not need to hold until you get within gun range. You get no points for steady to wing and shot. If you are within shot gun range when the bird flush...

Get on a training program and follow it. I recommend the Huntsmith Videos "The Silent Command" System but there are other great programs out there as well such as Perfect Start/Finish and Training with Mo. Doesn't matter which one you follow, each will give you a bird dog you're going to be proud of...

Help - Friend needs a Vet ASAP that can do surgery
My best friend went to Kansas for Pheasant hunting this week. Today was the last day. walking back to the vehicle a bird gets up and flies across the road, his 9mo old GSP chased and got hit. Everything happened so fast my friend said he can't explain how fast it all happened. Anyway, the front leg ...

You can identify the dog type so that the appropriate dog status symbols appear. 1. From the main menu, press DOG > ENTER. 2. Press MENU. 3. Select Change Dog Type. 4. Re: whistle vs. E-collar for distance recall
@Punchdrunk (the OP), If you get an e-collar with tone (audible beep) or vibrate it is very easy to train for recall with a pattern on either of these modes. One need not (and IMO) should not use the "stim mode" for recall. The training for tone/vibrate is the same as training for voice, hand signa...

Childrens Benadryl works. You simply want to use Benadryl with the only ingredient to be listed as: diphenhydramine. You can get the Benadryl in liquid form, such as children’s Benadryl and use 1mg per pound.

It doesn't really matter WHY he doesn't like frozen birds; he doesn't. I always tell people to imagine themselves walking around with a frozen lump in your mouth. If you want to make the birds last, put them in the refrigerator. They'll stay soft and the dog will like retrieving them. If he were ff...

Without seeing it I think I would take it back to where you're placing the Dowel in front and away and work it back to where you're holding the dowel away and down. Basically go back a bit and work your way back to where the problem is (If that makes sense). Before this when you were holding the dow...

Kill two birds with one stone and purchase a DT Launcher and when you want to use it as a blank pistol just use it without the dummy attached. Guaranteed it sounds like a 12ga.

I'd get a bag of pelleted feed, spread a good handlful in a likely piece of cover. Then, near dark, I would put a half dozen birds in a box with a slide or pull away gate nearby and walk away. I would have a string on the slide gate. I would do the same thing at two or more additional locations and...

Re: Releasing Birds - Need some advice
The number of birds depends on the number of fox, hawks, and owls on the property. A week is a looooooong time for quail to survive with a lot of predators. Personally, I release them one day and hunt them a day or two later. X2 Pen raised quail are stupid--they don't survive very well around predi...

chris - I suggest you start doing heel/whoa drills after the manner of Paul Long. When you walk, the dog heels. When you stop the dog stops and stands. If the dog tries to sit, you step off again before it can rock back. I use a version of the Smith wonder lead, but you can use a looped checkcord, ...

Use Band-Aids. Cut the sticky ends off the Telfa pad. Put one sticky pad down, sticky side up and place the foot with toes extended on it. Put the other sticky pad down, sticky side down on top of this to make a "Foot Sandwich". Keep this on for at least 24 hours. Usually this is enough time for the...
