For pheasants I like 4,5 , and 6's depending on how the birds are acting and how my gun patterns also. I normally hunt with a 20 guage and would say 4's are my first choice. Less shot in the meat!

Dave, It is pretty common knowledge that the very first GSP in Germany was white so it's not a big secret. However, they were not common when the dogs came to America. Back when I first became involved with birddogs about the only white you could find was the Moosgard breeding. Reason was exactly li...

The continental breeds are all natural retrievers or at least are suppose to be. Ive trained many many dogs, mostly Brits, but all of the other breeds too and have had one dog that I had trouble with getting it to retrieve. I will admit there is a difference between what we like to see in competion ...

Larue, I was in the service at the time your father was and the M-1 doesn't shoot 1000 yds with any accuracy. A target at that distance would have to be at least six or eight foot square for you to see it let alone hit it. We shoot coyotes at 200 to 300 yds if we have a good gun with preferably a bu...

Pat, Your dog does competes within his breed. If it wins it gets points towards a championship. The rest of the show was just working towards Best of Show. Rather than have all of the breed winners show for best of show in one ring( could be 50 dogs or more in the ring) they are broken into groups s...

sdgord, You have to remember those big ranging dogs came from dogs that did not range and had no field trial blood in them as there was no such thing. I think you will find range comes from hunting desire that is directed in another direction. Without a desire to find game no dog woul;d range. Think...

Back 40 tro 50 years ago about the only white you could find was the Moesgaarg breeding, Was a real rarity to see a light colored dog in a trial and never in the show ring. Its hard for me tro think that suddenly the dogs that could run turned white at the same time. I know for a fact that some peop...

There are lots of birds in Kansas, Nebraska, the Dakotas ans Iowa. Private ground is harder to come by especially for people just coming in to hunt. South Dakota has many many birds. However they raise and release a lot of them to supplement the wild birds. If I wanted to travel some where new I'd t...

I think most of us realize that there is a difference between field trials and hunting. They just happen to be two differnt sports. There are dogs and people who can handle both and there are some that can't. Choosing which type of trial you like to run and how well you do is simuliar to some one sa...

I think it is necessary to stop and think about what inbreeding, linebreeding, or outcrossing really does. Inbreeding and line breeding strengthen the genes that you have but add no new ones. This can not produce something you don't already have. Thus an AA dog is unlikely unless the parents have th...

fdsjr You have a puppy! He will be a puppy for a year or so. What you all seem to be talking about is what has happened to the European dogs when we bring them to America. We as a society have to have speed and good looks instead of reliability and efficeincy. The English pointers had the Fox Hound bred in to produce style and more speed. Gsp's had Pointer us...

Tak and Katies Dad are right. Just walk and enjoy. I think we get caught up in this training thing when in reality all we need to do is give a pup the opportunity to get out and explore with some guidance from us as they start to discover their inherited talents. In the meantime, till that happens, ...

My Brits always pointed both and retrieved both. I always said if I was hunting and the dog passed up a rabbit it was in trouble. I also understand when you have a birddog in competion you don't want it pointing rabbits but that is one of our silly rules. The thing about a good dog not pointing a ra...

Don't put it back on the breeder. As a breeder you can not be responsible for someone else. I've bought and sold many dogs and have never had a breeder stay in contact except for one that was somewhat of a friend. There is no way you can screen a person to see what kind of an owner he would be. Your...
