Re: first time hunt testing
At the top of the “Training” topic there is a thread called “Tips for hunt tests” which will have lots of compiled info for you. That being said, you can get the AKC rules and regs for the pointing dog hunt test off their website. Read up on that so you know what’s required at each level and how tes...

Re: A Novice and his Dog
I think whether you train as a flusher or pointer is going to depend the dog's instincts and how you want to hunt. If you want a flusher, you can make a flusher, but if you want a pointer, you may be subject to what the dog's instincts tell it. There are some more experienced trainers here that coul...

It may be different up here in Minnesota, but I find timberdoodles in low areas. Usually they are alder choked bottoms or wet aspen coverts (really small aspen). What I've noticed is that I can find them all morning long in those areas from an hour after sun-up to about noon then they're gone. I thi...

CJ, having raised cattle, including black baldies, I would say it’s quite selective breeding. The hardiness of the Hereford and the mother’s instincts of an angus. Just a big dog. And hybrid vigor cannot occur when two breeds of dog are cross. Hybrid vigor only occurs when two species interbreed, ie. horses and donkeys. I’m in MN too. I’ve had black bears in my yard and the woods on my property. I don’t think about them in the woods. Other than a sow with cubs, most run away if you yell at them without even looking to see what made the noise. If you’re worried about sows/cubs, put a bell on your dog and that should...

Steve, I’m curious... why do you want the dog in that range? Does it have to do with steadiness or more to do with not wanting to bust brush from 100 yards (I know that feeling)? Jon, People either buy pigeons for training, which is one of the best training birds readily available, or they buy birds from a bird produce, such as a game farm.
