Major issues with yesterday's hunt. English setter

So Maverick and I went out in the yard today and played his favorite game. I hide pheasant wings and he finds them. He is still super excited to "get the birdies." I'm sure he will be fine. I just need to slow down and go his pace. He likes to be with just me in the field and I should have respected...

Major issues with yesterday's hunt. English setter

party of one - You don't get it??? YOU screwed up. Big time. You put a puppy, a seven month old puppy...in a terrible situation. That sucks. Don't blame the dog. YOU screwed up! YOU are the one that needs training...not the dog. ? RayG You're right, it was my fault, and while I appreciate your comm...

Major issues with yesterday's hunt. English setter

So here's what happened. I took my 7 month old Setter hunting yesterday with a group. One other dog. 7 hunters. Started off fine. My dog was working when the other dog flushed a bird about 50 yards away. A few shots at the bird and my dog took off for the truck. Couldn't stop him. Went to the dog an...

Irrateded bum excessive but licking

Sounds like an anal gland issue. He may need to go to the vet and have them expressed. My mutt had that issue before and actually had to have one lanced. Not a pretty sight.

What states have huntable pheasant populations?

In the last few years I have started to hunt public land in PA for pheasant. The state allocates pheasants per the size of game land. I'm going out the next few days so I can report back. I've missed the 'stocking' days before so not much luck for me. I've got a good dog this year too. I also hunt ...

No Birds Today, But Some Better Hunting!

Had a short hunt with the puppy today. While we didn't get any birds, Maverick is really starting to hunt harder. I'm pretty proud of him, especially since he's not even 6 months yet. I did get a few crappy cell phone pics of him. Erik ImageUploadedByTapatalk1415742569.097056.jpg ImageUploadedByTapa...

First Solo Run

Took Maverick out for his first solo run today. No other dogs or hunters. Just him and I. He did a great job! Shot these two within an hour. Home in time for breakfast with the family.

Hope everyone is having a great season!

Erik

Puppie's First Hunt

Hello all, Took my pup out today for his first hunt. He helped me get these two. The first one, the rooster, went down and he ran straight to it. The second landed right near my hunting partner and he picked it up. All in all, a good first outing for a 5 month old. Good luck to all, Erik ImageUpload...

I got him from a friend who had his female bred. The sire, I believe, is a champ. I'll know more when I get all of the paperwork back. Here is a more recent photo.

crazy for the collar

The Halti collar is what we used with our mutt. It leads them by the nose and did wonders for him.

Why are all of my posts held until admin approval?

I have tried to post several times and each time I get a message that my post was received, but needed approval. Is there a minimum post count before it just posts or is my account goofy?

Thanks,
Erik in PA

Forgot to mention that I have a cousin that raises pheasants all summer to shoot in the fall. Gonna have a great time with this little guy this year with live birds.

First Post, First Gun Dog

Hello All, My name is Erik. I live in Central PA. We just got a new puppy yesterday. His name is Maverick and he's an English Setter. He comes from a great bloodline and I'm excited to see what kind of hunter he turns out to be. If he's half the hunter that his mother is, I'll be happy. Looking forw...
