Re: What's the size of your training grounds?
How little you can get by with to make it work and what you need to do your dogs genetic potential justice are two different things IMO. You can teach the mechanics on small acerage, but to develop a real bird dog you need space and birds. It also dictates how you can train - very regimented on a fe...

Re: 2nd Hunting Dog to run with GSP
If you are hunting quail in Texas just running one dog will make for a very short hunt - at least effective for a very short time. I guide all season, board dogs year round for many serious hunters and train dogs. I do not know any serious and passionate quail hunter in West/South-Texas that only ru...

Re: Pigeon or quail
I was wondering on others thoughts as to whether I should use quail or pigeons for training my dog. I used quail last summer with no problems. I see quite s bit of folks use pigeons. Is one more preferable then the other. I used quail because of the price $4 a piece and they flew back to a pen I ha...

Re: Send my GSP away or train myself
Hi, I train gun dogs for a living and just wanted to offer my advice as IMO most what you read in magazines and on the net puts the cart before the horse. I am 100% sure that if I read the articles and saw the videos now available about training bird dogs when I started out, then there is no way I w...

Re: Red setter vs irish setter
I love the dogs coming from Irish lines in Norway and German. Great video to watch even if dont speak Norwegian. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=45O0CJHFA_U The Irish setters winning in Norway are very often descendants from recent US imports.......As well as in English Setters in Norway they have ...

Re: Become Bird Dog Trainer
You have to train a lot of dogs(-: No school available..... Think either train your own dogs, win trials and make a name for yourself before turning professional. Or work for another trainer for very low wages for a while and learn that way.

Re: Need a help pointing
That sounds great, just let him chase and he will sure enough find out he can not catch them. I would advise absolutely no check cords/launchers or corrections at this stage. Much bigger chance it will mess things up than help anything. Just get him on lots of game birds, no recalls in the field and...

Re: Close, medium, big running dogs?
To answer your question about working distance, when hunting quail (I do not hunt on foot, but from UTV) then for me ideal is to have one close working dog within 50-60 yards and one dog running 100-200. That will vary depending on terrain and which individual dogs you have down at any one time. But...

Re: Close, medium, big running dogs?
I train dogs for a living and this discussion is hard bc people do have very, very different opinions on how long a yard is LOL. Most people that want a foot hunting dog do not want them out more than 50 yards. A majority think their dog is out 100 yards, but if you show them a dog running consisten...

Re: Tipping guides
I just have to say that the attitudes displayed in this thread is in my experience not representative for the hunters I guide for. In general quail hunters are educated about what they are doing, appreciative, polite and courteous.

Re: Tipping guides
I can only comment on quail hunts, but there in my experience 50 pr hunter/day and up is average when 3 hunters +. Less than 100 tip total for the group for a days hunt would make you stand out I think (-: From friends that guide Deer hunts, when trophy animals then the tips much, much higher in dol...

No verbal commands, check cords, launchers, no recall in field until your dog has been on 100 (game) birds.

Re: Whoa and steadiness help
If you can walk up to the dog and he does not flush until you are 10-15 feet away, then IMO he is ready to learn whoa. In my book you have done everything right. If he caught a couple birds, you just have to put him on more birds until he holds again( until you can walk up until you are 10-15 feet aw...

Re: Dog box brands
In Texas I am pretty sure the best boxes are made by Deerskin, with 4 inch insulation in roof, well insulated side walls and floor, all stainless inside and out, good fan, water tank, storage etc. Of course it will cost a lot more than the ones with no insulation (or only plastic inserts for insulat...
