Re: Stubborn pup

Fonzie - your dog is really very young at seven months! The stages that pups go through can be maddening. I've had ones that hated retrieving until way over a year or more in age and later became fanatics. I've had dogs that hated water and wouldn't swim until after they figured out that birds could...

Setterpoint: I've had two dogs who refused to retrieve a species they had not previously been introduced to, and, once introduced, they had no problems. You didn't say if the issue was long standing or brand new on grouse. Setters can be weak retrievers anyway so you may have to decide if 1) more FF...

I would work on having them sit in front of you and have them hold it. Give the command hold. As soon as they hold even for a couple of seconds praise them and give them a treat. Extend the time they have to hold before you give praise or a treat. When they will hold for while sitting work on bring...

Re: Training GSP to retrieve w/out FF

As I explained in my posts, the OP's three year old dog may not be interested in food, in which case PR isn't likely to work. If not interested in retrieving anything, then even FF may not be an option. I'm no pro (and yes, I've run licensed retriever trials), have done traditional FF in the past, a...

Re: Training GSP to retrieve w/out FF

A ten week pup has nothing in common with a three year old with problems. The justification in the ear pinch system over any other on the planet is that retrievers have been trained using this method in field trials since before I've been around the game and that's 50 years. The benefits of Force Fetching a dog far outweigh a little ear pinch for a couple days. You will get the retrieve you want and will have a different relationship, for the better, with your dog. Whether they need it or not, I FF all my dogs. FF is not just about the retrieve. I've heard that and som...

Still, you have to pay attention when Voigt, Hillman, Milner and others are moving away from the aversive component of the process and teaching fetch by other means. Most ...

My wife trains her dogs for a sport called Noseworks - basically it’s teaching the dog to find specific odors that are hidden in rooms, outside, in cars, etc. and they make a big deal about when the dog makes a “find”. Good discussion. I’ll just add my two cents about the way I think of PR You hold a piece of kibble above your dog's nose and watch his head go up and his butt go down and he sits. There is a reason to wait to FF until the season is over. If you begin FF then go hunting, there is a chance to go backwards. Northwoodshunter: you might try teaching a "trained retrieve", using positive reinforcement (food) to shape the retrieve.
